Post 23 Season tOSU Coaching Changes

Foot speed or athleticism DOES NOT account for going the wrong way. I’m not speaking about physical attributes.

LB’s should know which way to go when the ball is snapped.
Covered that with Chambers and his lack of instincts that you can’t cram a decades worth of experience at the position into 30 practices.

So that leaves Eichenberg. He looked terrible in ‘21. He looked great blitzing in ‘22. He looked very average to bad in ‘23 not blitzing all the time.

I’m still gonna say that’s not enough evidence to say Laurinaitis can’t coach when the general consensus around the program seems to be he has what it takes to be a great coach.

I think one thing that might be getting overlooked is .... and I know this is taboo in some circles but.... they just hired another white guy .... there's 3 non whites on the staff, there were 4 before.... given the makeup of the roster and who they are recruiting the vast majority are non whites. Does it matter in the end if he wins no but I don't think it will be a good look for OSU basically come out of these coaching changes only hiring white guys.... so this is part of the reason I expect JL to get asked to hold off another year before getting a full time job...I might be wrong but its just the way I see it....

I think it's fine unless they replace both LJ and Alford with white guys. 4 to 3 to 1 or 2 wouldn't be a good look. We might even end with 4 temp to 3 long term if the plan is to have transition coach with LJ then hire Laurinaitis next year. Would love LeCharles Bentley to be brough in for O-line a few years ago but last I heard he didn't want a coaching job and was happy as a trainer.

Bentley was reportedly responsible for some horrible, horrible evaluations that lazy OSU oline coaches relied on in the past for class fillers that resulted in no viable contributors, much less starters. I really don’t think that’s the move.

So Eric Wolford, Alabama’s O-line coach, is a Youngstown native, Ursuline grad & former head coach at YSU. He coached with the 49ers in 2016 while Day was also there. He’s considered a good recruiter. I believe this past cycle he was the 6th or 7th highest rated recruiter by 247 as far O-line coaches go. I can’t give an assessment on his coaching or his unit’s performance but all that other stuff sounds pretty appealing.

Are you saying O line coach or OC? He has been a mainstay in the SEC and NFL, other than his couple failed years at YSU.

If Frye go's they should definitely entertain bringing him.

Bama's Oline got better through 23, up until the Rose Bowl where they crapped the bed. Young Oline though.

I thought of him a while back even if Saban didn't retire, because he is a Ohio guy.

Birm, Doug, Austin and Bill sure have been busy the last 24 hours. Something like 3 or 4 podcasts/youtube episodes have dropped. Most of which have been reactions to all the moves.

At some point there will be a quiet period/off season. Right;-)

First year at Bama was really good with on the field results and recruiting, this year their OL play was about like ours. Recruiting is better than Frye or Stud without question. So early indicators say he'd likely be a slight improvement at the very least.

He would have a veteran group that started performing before we blew it up in the Cotton Bowl like a failed 3rd grade science experiment. Plus he would have his Bama center to help teach his philosophy, much like Knowles and McCallister. I would not be upset if we went that route.

Be optimistic all you want. But Michael Jordan would be a terrible coach. Being a good player doesn't always translate.....but being a Buckeye is all it takes for fans to want you to be coach. I don't know if he's good or bad, but my determining factor will never be "was he a good Buckeye?".

I don't buy that. I mean, maybe on bucknuts or twitter.
It's completely unsurprising Guiton is progressing as a QB coach. Cardale won a Championship for us, and not very interested in him as a coach. Similar with Braxton. I could maybe see JTB - he lacked natural ability (Neither Cardales arm nor Braxtons athleticism) but made up for it with his head.
Laurinitis wasn't just an All American LB. He grew into the on-field leader, calling out assignments, both at Ohio State and the NFL.
Nobody is surprised he's a coach.
