It's been awhile, but to my way of thinking, quite a lot like C'bus. Capital of vibrant state. Home to THE major university in state. Both universities are very much academic leaders, with great reputations. Rabid sports fans, of everything Longhorn. I prefer Ohio stadium, as Longhorn stadium gives me nosebleeds and vertigo when looking down.
Area around Austin is incredible. The lakes and hills are phenominal if you are boat people. Spent some time in the 'hill country' at some of the golf resorts, and are very elegant and upscale. The economy in Austin has alot of high tech, and Apple/Dell/? have outsourced assembly there, so there is a highly paid, educated populace beyond that of a major university. If your current job doesn't work out, there are other areas/jobs to jump to. A 'yankee' diploma (north of the Red River) is not as looked upon as a UT diploma (yankee is sometimes called 'know-it-alls'), and a Texan is never wrong.....very cliquish group.
Nightlife has probably changed, but 6th street always has something going on, and you can bar-hop from place to place until you find some music/women that you feel comfortable with. Many different varieties.
Downside is the 'red-necky' cowboy-up type of atmosphere present. I know that sounds judgemental, but I 'did' five years in Texas, and didn't much care for it
. If you do, well, Austin is more of a cowboy boots with a suit type of place. Good food, from 'Que to high French, with many options in between. Good transportation hub, with Southwest flying to many cities directly, and a short jump to Dallas (DFW), which will get you anywhere in the planet. In boom times (oil prices up which they are now), there is alot of money flowin, and house prices sky-rocket, so you might be priced out of the market in the nicest areas. Education system was pretty stable (not in the 'know' anymore), so check out the API of the school in the area (if you don't have kids now, maybe later, or even if not, it's important for resale value).......
Just off the top of my head, but the area is one I could live in if I had to live in Texas........I'm still California Dreamin'.......
