Polls for week of Nov. 6

MSU today is NOT the same MSU that beat Notre Dame. I see what you're saying, that our two losses were to better teams than their two losses, but you have to factor in that MSU was ranked at the relevant time.

Maybe you do, but I don't. My rationale was explained in the first post. I consider each team's entire body of work for this season.

I'm with Bill. Who cares if MSU was ranked when they played ND, or even OSU (which MSU was)

What matters is, when you do your ballot Bill's way, is a re-evaluation each week of what teams have to show for the season, and how that compares against eachother.

Fact is, OSU beat the same MSU team Purdue did. They weren't any better or any worse one week over the other. It's perception of being better, not actually being better you're talking about JCF.

I directly quoted you taking issue with Notre Dame being ranked #7 in the Coaches poll. I understand and respect your method of ranking teams, but do you understand why I don't think you can hold me to the rationale for your personal poll when I am addressing the critique of the Coaches poll?

When the issue is the Coaches poll's ranking, the discussion shifts to what the voters (the coaches) could have been factoring into their decision making process. I don't see how the argument that Notre Dame is a media darling would have anything to do with the D1A coaches' opinions on which teams are the best, so in my mind it must be something else.

I think MSU is obviously demoralized and playing without focus, and truly is a lesser team than they were when they knocked off Notre Dame in South Bend. I don't think it's that far fetched to think that others feel that Notre Dame lost to a quality opponent at the time. What is unfortunate, however, is that Ohio State beat MSU when they were still playing decently, and we didn't lose both of our 2 losses at home (and we didn't have to pull bullshit tactics like growing the grass long to gain an advantage over Texas).

I don't know about that...Don't you think OSU now is better than OSU was earlier in the year?

I think they're playing better, certainly more polished as a matter of more and more reps (natural as the year progresses) but in relation to the rest of the field, I'd say Ohio State is exactly where they were when the season began, and that is - able to compete with every team in College (Yes, that includes USC)

What is unfortunate, however, is that Ohio State beat MSU when they were still playing decently, and we didn't lose both of our 2 losses at home (and we didn't have to pull bullshit tactics like growing the grass long to gain an advantage over Texas).

I believe that my response indicated that we could both do as we wish. I was responding to this quote of yours (bolding added), which appeared to be worded in a way that was telling me how I had to look at ranking teams:

JohnnyCockfight said:
I see what you're saying, that our two losses were to better teams than their two losses, but you have to factor in that MSU was ranked at the relevant time.

My response was:

Maybe you do, but I don't....

I don't see how that's "holding you" to the rationale of my ranking method. I was saying that I don't "have to factor in" what you're saying about MSU. It seemed to me that you were addressing me directly, since the words you're and you were both in the sentence. I now understand that you were referring to the Coaches (not my) poll, and I believe that you meant to convey the opinion that "one should factor in ...". It's semantics, but I definitely react to the words "you must" when someone is responding to something I wrote.

Anyway, to each his own on polling methods. I explained mine, but I don't believe I ever said anyone else must use that logic. I also don't think you meant to indicate that either, but the words 'you must' initially appeared that way to me.

You, with bold:

VaTech beat Georgia Tech, who is ranked, and they gave West Virginia, another ranked team, their only loss.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, has only the victory over scUM as a win vs. a ranked opponent. And they lost to MSU, who is unranked. How are they number 7?

Me:

MSU today is NOT the same MSU that beat Notre Dame. I see what you're saying, that our two losses were to better teams than their two losses, but you have to factor in that MSU was ranked at the relevant time.

It was directed towards you, in an attempt to help you understand why Notre Dame is ranked #7. I didn't mean "have to" to be an order, just as a poorly worded way of saying "should consider." I still think, however, that relying on the criteria for your poll to be applied to the official poll is a mistake--but maybe that's not what you meant at all--maybe I wasn't clear in what I was saying.

Everyone has their own criteria for their poll. I agree with you that everyone should rank teams as they see fit.

I didn't intend to have my criteria applied to the BP poll, and don't believe I indicated that. And even if I did indicate that, I'm pretty sure that most people that vote in the poll would either ignore what I said, or more likely, tell me in various creative ways to place my criteria where the sun doesn't shine.

I was only explaining the reasoning for my poll, so if anyone chose to question why I had teams ranked in a certain order, they would be aware of how I tried to determine my personal rankings.

Anyway, JCF, a good discussion of our misunderstandings. Although anybody else reading this is probably bored silly by now. :wink2:

LSU blew a 21 point lead at home to Tennessee...no way they are a top 5 team. No way.

As for Miami, well, the voters will always, always think that a Florida team should be in the top 3-5 if at all humanly possible...just so happens Miami has just one loss. Watch Florida shoot up the rankings if Miami stumbles and Florida wins out.

As for Notre Dame, well...they've beaten a lot of big names with mediocre or downright shitty teams (Michigan, Pitt, Tennessee, Purdue, Washington, BYU), and lost to a team that may very well miss a bowl game (Michigan State). But quite frankly with as ridiculously crappy as several of the 1 loss teams are (UCLA, Texas Tech, Oregon, West Virginia) I guess there aren't a whole lot of teams to put ahead of them...besides Ohio State and Georgia.
