Hey, Steve Sax had that same problem.
actually Dale Murphy had this problem also. He was a catcher in the minors, and could not throw it back to the mound. Therefore he ended up in the outfield. For some reason I think mickey tettleton had this problem also

Anyone remember a baseball player named Jimmy Piersall. In his day he was one of the all time strangest players. However it turned out he had severe mental problems. He wrote a book titled "Fear Strikes Out, The Jimmy Piersall Story" which was later made into a movie.

When I first got to Chicago, Piersall was doing Sox games with Harry Carey (1979/80). After a couple of years Harry moved over to the Cubs, and Piersall lost the media gig, but he wasn't really very good at it.

I saw the movie with Anthony Perkins, it was just OK.

who was the pitcher for the Cubs with all the really oddball routines like skipping over the baseline on his way on and off the field? Turk Wendell or something to that effect? i could be totally off with that name, but that's the name in my mind................i haven't heard of these other guys, must be before my time, but would this dude be in that same league of strangeness?

Wendell was in the minor leagues of weirdness.

Turk is a good one. I think he used to wear a necklace of boars teeth or some other wild animal he killed with his bare hands. I also think he used to brush his teeth in the dugout after every inning.

There was a relief pitcher for the Cardinals who used to talk to himself just behind the mound. He would do that for before every inning and then punch the pocket in his glove and turn stride to the rubber and just glare at the hitter. Can't remember his name but I believe his nickname was the Mad Hungerian. Does anyone know who I am referring to?

Don't know if I would consider him the strangest but at least he was interesting.
