Poll: Hypothetical Choice for next 5 years

If one or the other had to happen to Ohio State, you would choose?

  • Jump up 25 spots in the US News Rankings but suffer through 5 mediocre years of football

  • Drop 25 spots in the US News rankings but win 1 NC and 3 Big Ten titles.

Out of curiosity, I wonder what percentage of those willing to see a nose dive in the university's academic reputation in exchange for a football title are non-alums versus alumni?
Does it matter? Ohio State has been and forever will be viewed as a "football factory."

Perception does not equal reality.

Ohio State could jump into the Top 5 academically, but if that means 5 years of 6-6 teams, the school would still be considered a football factory, only now with a bad football team.

Twenty years from now, nobody will care about OSU's academic ranking from 2006-2010, but that national championship trophy will still be sitting in the WHAC.

As the saying goes, flags fly forever.

Now, that would be way too easy? It's only when one has to choose what's truly most important with an accompanying sacrifice, that one's values are revealed.

I'm an alum and OSU staffer, and I simply don't put too much stock in academic rankings--that's for the bureaucrats in administration to worry about. The sheer size of OSU means students will always have the opportunity to get whatever level of higher education they desire.

Hypothetically, Ohio State could actually continue fielding championship caliber football teams and climb in the academic rankings by offering more directed reading courses ... a lot more.

... hypothetically. :wink2:
