Iowa All-Big Ten DE pleads guilty in taxi scuffle

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa's all-Big Ten defensive end Adrian Clayborn has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in a case involving a taxi driver.

The 21-year-old from St. Louis was originally charged with assault causing bodily injury after he allegedly punched the driver on Jan. 19, 2009, when the cabbie honked at him.

Online court records show Clayborn pleaded guilty Wednesday to disorderly conduct. The simple misdemeanor is described in court records as fighting or violent behavior. He was fined $100. The assault charge was dismissed.

Oregon kicker Beard pleads guilty to misdemeanor harassment

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon kicker Rob Beard pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of physical harassment in a Jan. 24 street fight that left him seriously injured.

The Register-Guard reported that prosecutors on Friday said the 19-year-old Beard was so drunk that he doesn't remember shoving a woman to the ground before he was beaten unconscious by two men who intervened on the woman's behalf.

Lane County Circuit Court Judge Maurice Merten sentenced Beard to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service.

The two other men, 19-year-old Kirby Hawkins and 20-year-old Maurice Peterson, each pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor assault and were sentenced to 18 months probation.

Linebacker Josh Israel Kaddu is the latest University of Oregon football player to face a criminal charge after he was cited early Saturday for being a minor in possession of alcohol.


Kaddu, a sophomore, was cited after an officer noticed a man trying to gain entry into a white GMC Yukon parked at Eighth Avenue and Olive Street about 12:34 a.m. Saturday, Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said. The officer observed the man pulling on the door handle of the driver’s-side door and apparently trying to pry the door open, Kletzok said. The man was unresponsive to the officer and appeared to be intoxicated, she said.


The owner of the vehicle, who arrived a few moments later, did not wish to press charges, Kletzok said.

WTF? They beat a guy unconscious and get 18 months probation on a misdemeanor? Yeah, he shoved a woman down while drunk, but still...

Georgia's Mettenberger arrested - SEC Blog - ESPN

Zach Mettenberger's arrest over the weekend on a handful of misdemeanor charges probably isn't the kind of thing that eliminates him from Georgia's quarterback race.

But it's certainly not going to help him, either.

Having spent some time with Georgia coach Mark Richt last week, he made it abundantly clear that the No. 1 thing he was looking for from his starting quarterback next season was good decision-making.

And even though Richt didn't specify it at the time, I'm sure he meant both on and off the field.

Mettenberger, a redshirt freshman, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with underage possession of alcohol, disorderly conduct, obstruction and two counts of possession of false identification. The incident occurred at a local bar in Remerton, Ga., which is just outside Valdosta. Mettenberger was transported to the Lowndes County Jail. He posted bond and was released.

The Bulldogs practiced last Thursday, but are off this week for spring break.

The alcohol charge in itself could lead to a one-game suspension for Mettenberger under Georgia's athletic association policy.

Michigan State receivers Mark Dell and B.J. Cunningham were sentenced to 18 months probation and 150 hours of community service Monday for their roles in an on-campus assault in November.

Dell and Cunningham both pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery in January as part of a plea agreement where a more serious charge of conspiracy was dropped.

Eleven current or former Spartans players have pleaded guilty to assault for their roles in a Nov. 22 incident at a campus residence hall during a fraternity potluck function.

Sounds like he was already 9/10th of the way to unconscious before they laid a glove on him.

Granted, I've read few details about the event, but when people come to the defense of a weaker person who is apparently being mugged or beaten, don't we usually call that a "hero"?

As a point of clarification, Pryor said Sunday the surgery was on
his left knee, the one he told The Plain Dealer was buckling when he walked
in late January. In the news release about the surgery three weeks ago,
Ohio State reported the surgery was on Pryor's right knee.

Pryor said he plans to be fully ready for the start of spring practice on
April 1. He said he's been moving around a bit in some drop-back workouts,
but hasn't done any cutting during running drills. He said his roommate,
linebacker Andrew Sweat, also coming off ACL surgery, took care of him
while he was out, and Ohio State fans sent their best wishes as well.

"Some people sent me fruit and stuff like that," Pryor said.
"I don't know how they got my address, but thank you for all that."

Big difference from being "shoved down" and "mugged or beaten". Plus it was two against one, with the one being pretty much incapicitated by alcohol. They likely could've restrained him without much effort and held him for security/police, but they took the opportunuity to wale on the guy. Keep in mind that there are more limits to what a plain citizen can do to another citizen than the limits of what trained security/police officials can do to that citizen.
