Police/Legal Blotter (stop breaking the law, asshole!)

He was denied entry into Canada last year when he attempted to appear in court on those charges because of his criminal history.
They didn't even want him in the country to appear in court! But I can't say I blame them. I guess Tom Osborne's coddling didn't straighten Phillips out.

The story of Lawrence Philips is not just a story of wasted talent but of a man that appears to have a formidable chance of doing real harm to somebody. He should be removed from society now and given treatment. Something is very wrong.

Derek Ross sounds like someone having difficulty coming to terms with the end of his football career. I hope he comes right.

OSU football player arrested
Program infested with criminals
oops, wrong osu....

(U-WIRE) STILLWATER, Okla. -- In a preseason peppered with player dismissals and controversy, the Oklahoma State University football team received another blow as senior fullback Shawn Willis was arrested Sunday morning on charges of first-degree burglary.

According to the Tulsa World, the Stillwater Police Department received a 911 phone call from Willis' former girlfriend at about 5:30 a.m., on Sunday, after the player allegedly beat the doors, windows and sides of her trailer home. Willis, 22, was then reported to threaten bodily harm to a guest of his ex-girlfriend, force his way into the trailer and damage a bedroom door.

A spokesman for the Payne County Sheriff's Office told the Tulsa World that Willis was jailed around 8 a.m. on Sunday, but was released on bail by 11 a.m.

Willis, listed at 6-foot-1 and 260 pounds, has not yet been released from Oklahoma State's roster, though the Tulsa World reported Monday that he did not show up to the Cowboys' practice or meetings Sunday evening. Head coach Mike Gundy refused to comment.

"I don't know anything about it," Gundy told World reporters. "All I know is he didn't show up today. I have not seen the young man. I haven't talked to anybody from the police."

In a written statement, the Stillwater Police Department wrote, "Mr. Willis was cooperative with officers through their contact with him."

Sunday's incident was not his first run-in with the Stillwater, Okla., police, according to documents provided by the Oklahoma State Courts Network, Willis has previously received a charge for a seatbelt violation on Jan. 21, 2004; inattentive driving on March 3, 2005; and a DUI on May 5, 2005.

Willis' most recent arrest comes just weeks after Oklahoma State's media day, when he emphasized his role as a team leader for a young Cowboy team.

"My whole outlook on this year, being a senior and everything, is basically going out there making sure I do everything I can to help this team," Willis said in an Aug. 6 interview. "All these coaches have got high expectations for me, and I'm going to do everything in my power to make them happy."

After a junior season highlighted by 12 starts, 175 yards off 39 carries and four touchdowns, Willis was expected to fill a hole beside redshirt freshman Mike Hamilton and sophomore Calvin Roberts. With competition in the backfield, Willis' playing time in offensive coordinator Larry Fedora's single-back offense would have likely been limited, though Willis emphasized his most important service to the Cowboys came in sharing his knowledge with younger teammates.

"Coach was trying to teach them how to do the steps on a certain play, and they weren't understanding the way coach was saying," Willis said. "I went and talked to them a little about it, and they got it. It just takes the little stuff like that to go through the whole team on offense and defense, and we just get better."

Even as a team leader and mentor, Willis' future with the Cowboys might be in jeopardy as Gundy has already dismissed eight players for violating team policies. In a recent conversation with the Tulsa World, however, Willis said he is ready to accept whatever Gundy may decide.

"We're all grown men now," Willis said. "We've got to accept responsibility for our actions."

Looks like Mike Leach subscribes to the Bobby Bowden theory of discipline.

Troubled Texas Tech safety to play

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech starting safety Vincent Meeks could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine after he allegedly violated his probation on a forgery charge.

Meeks' legal entanglement will not keep him from playing for the Red Raiders, Tech coach Mike Leach said.

"Vincent made some bad decisions on his part and was also a victim of some bad circumstances created by other people," Leach said in Wednesday's editions of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "Team-wise, he's fine."

Meeks, a senior, has made 27 career starts since he cracked the lineup in the ninth game of his freshman season.

He is accused of violating terms of his three-year probation on a charge of forgery of a financial instrument, Rockwall County District Attorney Ray Sumrow said Wednesday. Meeks failed to report to a probation officer for several months, didn't pay court costs and failed to complete community service and other programs, Sumrow said.

Meeks was accused of trying to cash a $475 illegal computer-generated check in 2003 that was made out to him, Sumrow said. He pleaded guilty but was not convicted because the court gave him deferred adjudication, Sumrow said. If he had completed his probation without any incidents, the charge would have been removed from his record.

Meeks surrendered himself Tuesday on an arrest warrant issued Aug. 9 and was arraigned and arrested on the same forgery charge. He was released from the Rockwall County Jail late Tuesday after posting $10,000 bond.

If the court revokes his probation at a hearing not yet scheduled, Meeks could be sentenced to two years in jail and fined $10,000, Sumrow said. The judge also could sentence him to probation.

Meeks' attorney, Derek D. Brown of Fort Worth, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

Allen was scheduled to appear on Sept. 30 for sentencing for his conviction on a charge of assault causing injury. That date falls more than a third into the Hawkeye football schedule.

Allen’s attorney, Matt Petrzelka, filed a motion Wednesday to move up the date.

“The defendant desires to account for the acts upon which the conviction was based as soon as possible and has additional interests in beginning to make full restitution to the victim as soon as possible, the motion read.

Sept. 2 is next Friday, the day before Iowa’s season opener against Ball State.

Concert rampage
Jayhawks' Ringwood suspended for alleged assault

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- A University of Kansas football player was suspended from the team Friday for his role in an altercation at a country music concert.

Coach Mark Mangino suspended backup fullback Bruce Ringwood indefinitely; the player had been arrested and charged with two counts of assault last weekend in Kansas City, Mo.

Ringwood is accused of repeatedly punching a man in the face, hitting the man's wife and pushing the woman down a flight of stairs.
"I'm disturbed that one of our players would be involved in something like this," Mangino said. "This behavior goes against everything we stand for."

Ringwood issued an apology to his teammates, coaches and university, though not to the couple he's accused of assaulting.

"I regret that it happened," he said. "And my focus now is on doing everything I can do to be a good student and a good football player."

Two ex-Gamecocks enter pleas
Telfort, Brownlee guilty of att. burglary, petty larceny

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/ncaa/08/29/bc.fbc.scarolina.thefts.ap/index.html

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Two former South Carolina football players pleaded guilty to stealing electronic items from the school's Williams-Brice Stadium and were sentenced Monday to one year probation.

Woodly Telfort and Brian Brownlee pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree burglary and petty larceny. Each was sentenced to five years, suspended to one year of probation. The sentences include 100 hours of community service, drug testing and an anger management course.

Telfort and Brownlee were among six players charged with taking computer laptops and other items from the stadium on Nov. 22, after the team was told it would not play a bowl game as punishment for a fight during the last game of the season against Clemson.

Iowa's Allen suspended for opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa cornerback Antwan Allen was suspended for Saturday's season opener against Ball State following his conviction for breaking a student's jaw.

Kirk Ferentz, coach of the No. 11 Hawkeyes, said Monday the university could take further discipline after Friday's sentencing.

"We do not condone the use of physical force and I feel confident Antwan fully understands that," Ferentz said.

Allen, a senior from Tampa, Fla., was convicted Aug. 18 of assault causing injury for punching an Iowa State student in November. He faces up to one year in jail and a $1,500 fine at sentencing.

He will be required to perform 20 hours of community service during the fall semester, Ferentz said. The coach said the player already has completed 20 hours of community service and anger management counseling.

Allen said he was "horribly sorry for any harm I have caused and I accept full responsibility for my actions."

I don't know if it's true or not, but I've been told that Allen basically lined the kid up and drilled him without warning. I have no idea if the kid was innocent in the whole deal (he may have been talking $hit, but he needs to remember he's a D-1 athlete and the other guy was just some student).

Go Bucks!!! In Tress We Trust.
