Police/Legal Blotter (stop breaking the law, asshole!)

Williams, Price suspended from team

STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut guards Marcus Williams and A.J. Price were suspended from the team on Wednesday after the duo were arrested in connection to the theft of four laptop computers.

Williams, the Huskies' starting point guard, was arrested Tuesday and faces four counts of third-degree larceny, which carry a penalty of up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines. Price, a redshirt freshman, was charged on Friday.

"They are barred indefinitely from all team activities, and their academic and personal activities will be closely monitored on a daily basis by the members of our basketball staff," UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. "They will continue to have complete access to all of the academic support staff so they can focus their energies on their studies."

Police said they expect to make one more arrest in the case.

Williams surrendered to campus police just hours after returning from Argentina, where he competed on the U.S. team in the men's Under 21 championships.

Police said Williams and two others tried to sell the computers at several locations in Manchester. Employees at a pawn shop in Manchester recognized Williams as soon as he entered the store and told him they did not take laptop computers, police said.

The four laptops, which have a total value of $11,000, have been recovered.

Williams and Price had been expected to shore up UConn's backcourt, a position beset by off-court problems. Price missed last season after a brain hemorrhage in October and had not yet been medically cleared for this coming year. Williams missed most of the 2003-04 national championship season because of academic problems.

Guard Antonio Kellogg was expelled in April at the end of his freshman season after being charged with marijuana possession and assaulting a police officer.

Williams and Price are free on $10,000 bond and are due in court on Aug. 23.

Allen found guilty of assault
Hawkeye cornerback faces year in jail

By Mike McWilliams
Iowa City Press-Citizen

A Johnson County judge found starting Iowa cornerback Antwan Allen guilty of assault causing injury stemming from a fracas last November on the pedestrian mall.

However, Allen's status on the Hawkeyes remains to be seen.

In a seven-page ruling filed Thursday, Associate Judge Stephen C. Gerard II found that Allen, 22, did not act in self defense and was not justified when he struck Maurice Payne from behind. The blow knocked Payne unconscious and broke his jaw.

The alleged incident happened after 2 a.m. Nov. 28 on the pedestrian mall.

"The defendant is a skilled athlete who regularly participates in a physically violent sport," Gerard wrote. "He must defend himself from other players and neutralize opponents without striking blows to the head with his fists."

During a bench trial last week, Allen testified that someone he had been arguing with at the pedestrian mall punched him and caused him to fall down. Once he rose, dazed, Payne ran toward him, Allen said.

Allen said he struck the Iowa State University student, thinking he had been the original assailant who was coming back to "finish the job."

"(Allen) did not wait to determine Payne's intentions, and he did not attempt to neutralize Payne in a less-lethal manner," Gerard wrote, adding Payne made no overt attempt to provoke Allen.

Defense lawyer Matthew Petrzelka declined to comment on the verdict saying it would be "unethical" for him to do so.

Allen, a senior from Tampa, Fla., started all 38 games during his first three seasons with the Hawkeyes.

Allen was punished in-house by coach Kirk Ferentz last winter, but still could face other disciplinary measures. Messages left for Hawkeye sports officials were not immediately returned Thursday.

Gerard will sentence Allen at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 in Johnson County District Court. Allen faces up to one year in jail and a $1,500 fine.

how is ferentz with his players, i mean this a serious incident, tressel wouldnt play this guy, do you think ferentz will?
I'd be astounded if Ferentz lets Allen suit up. Astounded and more than a little disappointed.
This surely leads, at minimum, to a suspension pending sentencing. After sentence is handed down who knows? Dismissal from team most likely?

It has been posted before somewhere that the list of Iowa players involved in scrapes with the law (this is more than a scrape) under Ferentz is pretty long. Iowa seems to get a pass from any media coverage because they are "the little engine that could" and Ferentz is the second coming. I believe Ferentz pleaded ignorance in some of these cases.

I would be surprised if Antwan Allen isn't in uniform and playing come the Big 10 opener. :roll1:

EDIT

This was posted awhile back by Dryden. Boy, Ferentz is really running a tight ship over there, huh?

I've made a cursory attempt to try and validate and/or refute the claim that Kirk Ferentz's program has been worse off than Jim Tressel's ... so here we go.

I'm not going to spend man-years researching this, because frankly, I don't care enough. But a simple Google search combined with some searches of Iowa newspapers revealed the following.

Oh, and I'm not judging Ferentz or calling for his head or any some-such-nonsense, just like I wouldn't in Tressel's case. The bulk of the arrests parallel OSU, open container, public intox, disorderly conduct-type misdemeanors. Regardless, I'd like to hear Trev's opinion on his prima-donna coach now?!

[ 0] Fred Barr - plead guilty to a simple assault that they were charged for on July first of 2000.

OK - I'm not going to count them because this occurs in 2000, and I'm only looking to count players charged from 2001 onward, since the argument is comparison of Ferentz/Iowa and Tressel/OSU. The reason I am noting these two clowns though is that Mo Brown will make another appearance in the next group of players, and he still was never punished beyond a game or two suspension. In fact, it's obscene how many are repeat offenders who not only continued to start, but lettered and made All-American.

I think Iowa will find out that with increased exposure....comes increased scrutiny...they have been in the shadows....in a media sense....but they are now the darlings of the media...but that could change in a hurry...I don't think Ferentz is a bad person or coach...it just happens with players....it's always easy to sit in judgement....like the talking heads at ESPN...Iowa is lucky that they don't have the number of media that OSU has covering sports...As long as it's someone else...other than OSU...I just want people to talk about football....when they talk about OSU.....GO BUCKS

Derek Ross arrested :(

pot in the car

Former football standout Ross charged with trafficking drugs

By Charles D. Perry The Herald
Former Northwestern High School football star Derek Ross, who went on play in college and the NFL, was arrested on drug charges in Oconee County this week.
Ross, 25, was charged with trafficking marijuana and conspiracy to traffic marijuana Thursday night after an Oconee County Sheriff's sergeant found 25 pounds of pot in the Chevy Impala the Ross was driving, according to a sheriff's report.

Sgt. Dale Colegrove stopped the Impala just before 8 p.m. on I-85 at exit 4 in Fair Play, because Ross was following too closely, the report stated.

As Colegrove approached the car, he could see marijuana in the center console and smell it, the report stated.

Ross, whose address was listed as 238 Epting St., Rock Hill, was asked to step out of the Impala while Colegrove checked his driver's license.

As the sergeant talked with Ross, he discovered the rental car was not in his name, the report stated. Ross told Colegrove that his girlfriend rented the car. Ross said he and another passenger, 24-year-old Dalmicos Hemphill of 179 Nobel Way, Rock Hill, had flown to Houston on Tuesday.

Colegrove gave Ross a warning for driving too closely and then asked if he could search the Impala. Ross allowed the sergeant to search the vehicle, the report stated.

In the trunk, Colegrove found a duffle bag with about 25 pounds of marijuana. Ross and Hemphill were arrested and taken to the Oconee County Detention Center. A 21-year-old woman who was also in the Impala was not charged.

Ross has had problems with law enforcement before.

According to a background check from the State Law Enforcement Division, Ross has convictions for driving with a suspended license and failure to stop for blue lights.

When he was a sophomore cornerback at Ohio State University, he was arrested for giving a false name to a state trooper who stopped him for speeding.

Ross entered the NFL in 2002. He has played for the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings, according to nfl.com. He is not on any NFL team's current roster.

Ross faces a sentence of 25 to 30 years in jail, said Capt. Donnie Fricks of the Oconee Sheriff's Office. Both Ross and Hemphill were being held at the Oconee County Detention Center Friday night. Each has a bond of $75,000.

Lawrence Phillips - Driving into Pedestrians

Link

Former NFL Star Sought by L.A. Police <!-- END HEADLINE -->
<!-- BEGIN STORY BODY -->By ANDREW DALTON, Associated Press Writer2 hours, 32 minutes ago

Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips, who was wanted by police for domestic violence, was arrested Sunday after allegedly running his car into three teenagers who argued with him during a pickup football game, police said.

Phillips, 30, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic abuse and held without bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Web site. It wasn't immediately clear if Phillips had an attorney to represent him.

Police had been seeking Phillips since earlier this month for allegedly attacking his girlfriend twice, once choking her into unconsciousness.

Phillips joined a group of 16- and 17-year-olds in a pickup football game in Exposition Park on Sunday and got into an argument with some of the teens, said Los Angeles Police Officer Sandra Escalante. He left, but came back and drove a car onto the field, hitting three of the boys, she said.

The three teenagers were treated at a hospital; none of their injuries was considered life threatening, police said.

The car was reported stolen in San Diego last week, Escalante said.

Phillips was arrested and held on the domestic violence felony warrant. Charges are pending in the Sunday incident, Escalante said.

It wasn't immediately clear if Phillips had an attorney to represent him.

The former University of Nebraska star has a history of high-profile trouble with the law going back a decade to his time as one of the nation's top college football players.

He was drafted in 1996 by the St. Louis Rams, despite pleading no contest to a charge of domestic violence in a confrontation with a girlfriend, but was released for insubordination the following year. Phillips then signed with the Miami Dolphins, but was released after pleading no contest to hitting a woman in a nightclub.

He later played in the NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League, He later played in the Canadian Football League, but was dropped from two teams for behavioral problems.

He was charged in Quebec in late 2003 with sexual assault, assault and uttering threats, apparently against another girlfriend. He was denied entry into Canada last year when he attempted to appear in court on those charges because of his criminal history.
