Poinsettia Bowl (TCU 37, NIU 7) Dec. 19

DSA for the Poinsettia Bowl

Those familiar with DSA will know what this post is about without explanation. If you aren't familiar, but you like stats; do a search for DSA in the "Buckeyes" forum and you'll find a great number of hits, most of which contain a definition. If you aren't familiar and don't like stats; hit "Next Thread" at the bottom of the page ("Previous Thread" if you prefer).

Recall that DSA essentially compares you to the other teams that your opponents played. Therefore, your opponents' collective schedule strength should be taken into consideration. This is a tedious thing to do, especially if you factor out all Div. IAA competition like we do. Fortunately modern spreadsheets do all of the work for you.

Also recall that we have a single number stat that shows how well each team performed points-wise this season. We call it Differential Scoring Composite (DSC). We have a similar one-number metric for yards, called
DYC. An average number for both DSC and DYC is 1.00.

So the most concise way of determining our opponents' collective schedule strength is to take the average of the DSC and DYC for all of the teams on our opponents' schedules.

Here is how these numbers stack up for the Poinsettia Bowl:
Team_____________Opponents' Sched. Strength

_________________DSC_______________DYC

TCU______________1.035_____________1.024

NIU______________0.895_____________0.951
Clearly, DSC will compare TCU to a significantly higher standard than that to which it compares NIU. In other words, the following analysis actually underestimates the Horned Frogs' superiority to the Huskies.

DSC Prediction

Briefly, this method looks at how good each team performs compared to how other teams performed against the same opponents. By combining stats, two predictions are derived for both yards and points. This is a raw numerical analysis. It does not consider match-ups or Big Game Experience or coaching or any of a host of other factors that affect the outcome of college football games.

Team______________Yards______________Points

TCU______________420-462______________21-25

NIU______________249-286______________13-14
Considering the difference in Opponents' Schedule Strength, it looks like Vegas has this one pegged pretty well.
