Wow. From a business perspective, this upgrade is a no-brainer. Could pay for itself in the first year, save money down the road, and help BP do some neat-o stuff.

I tried to use the search function so I could find the thread, from a few years ago, where we discussed getting some online poker games together to raise money for the site. However, all I was able to find were several posts proclaiming, "I'd rather jerk off to poker after dark."

Since I won?t be using the search tool ever again, I?ll just post my idea for a new server fund raiser in this thread. Poker Stars now has a "Home Game" feature (that is actually being advertised on BP).

From what I've read about Home Game:It is available using the "free" .net site; It allows hosts to create private groups of up to 50 people; Multiple players from the same IP can enter into the same game because the anti-collusion software is disabled, due to the assumption that everyone knows that everyone else will play a straight game.

Essentially, my idea is just like the idea we had a few years ago. Setup a tournament where your invitation is dependent upon receipt of a specified amount to BP. Say, $40 or $50? There could also be multiple groups and tournaments in order to fit just about anyone's schedule. I'm not sure about any legal issues that may go with the donations, but it seems to me that this was setup with the idea that real money would be tied to these "home games"...just not directly tied to Poker Stars.

I am not techy enough to jump in on the recommendation portion of your request, Clarity, but it sounds like you have good advice already from the team that are making the offer.

The breakdown of the outlay vs savings is sound and well worth it. My two cents is go to for it. And I will make arrangements with The Husband (tm) to send in a donation for the both of us asap. We have been meaning to get back on that recently anyway, so this thread was the kick in the pants we needed.

I actually did that, but...with "Show Threads" and "Search Titles Only" both marked, the thread didn't show up for me. With "Show Posts" and "Search Titles Only" both marked, the thread does come up, but was much further down the list than I thought it would be. I stopped looking too soon, because I thought the discussion happened around the same time as the 2008 drive, and not late summer of 2007.

I was only joking about not using the search function anymore. I just thought it was funny how many times pleasuring oneself to poker after dark was brought up through 2008 and 2009. :tongue2:

Clarity, I have no clue what exactly you said. But if I get the gyst, things could get worse if we don't do something that will make things better :biggrin: Sounds like a no brainer, as soon as my better half gets back, I'll have her paypal out some do-re-mi.

The above is what we're considering. We would buy one. A friend of ours who would be sharing the hardware and connection with us would buy another. He would purchase both boxes up front (and build, place, configure, etc.), we would pay him back for one of them over the next few months out of March Madness ad money and the Spring drive. We would have the opportunity (but not the obligation) to buy the other at some point in the future if we ever needed to split back off on our own for some reason.

If we green light this, the hardware will be purchased and the boxes built over the next couple of weeks, to go online on or before March 15th. We'd then take the next few weeks to move the databases over, install new/fresh upgraded files in fresh directories (stripping away years of archaic/unused files left over from past mods and versions), and then clean it up and tweak it as we please before moving the DNS over.

The positives will be immediate. On top of saving money every month, we'll have redundancy we've never before enjoyed, a sysadmin to maintain and update the box itself who is local to the colocation facility, and an increase in server power that I really just can't measure against our current box (maybe others can). The bottom line is we'd be going from 4-cores on one box to 12-cores across two, with the freedom to double up to 24-cores in the future. 16gb ram on one box to 32gb across two. SSD drives for fast caching, 300gb drives x14 for RAID-10 on both boxes. Integrated management versus none -- it really is just night and day.

If we ever buy the second box from him, the money spent will be quite a bit higher than the 4k for two used boxes we originally imagined. If we just stick with the one, obviously we're spending a little less. Either way, we'll be well prepared to stand on our own if we ever need to, but for as long as we're with him on the new connection, the site should never really struggle with any level of traffic we're able to throw at it.

Anyway, just want to throw all of this out there in case anyone has anything to say or contribute to the discussion. We're a little pressed on time in terms of setting all of this in motion, but I want this to be as transparent a process as possible, particularly as it's the site itself which will be paying for the upgrade, largely through the power of the Spring Drive donations.

Exciting stuff, really. :)

The thought of hitting the end of March with super-servers and everything upgraded and clean is really, really, REALLY appealing. Can't wait until the balance shifts from worrying about the next band-aid to finding cool new things we can do to grow BP. I think I feel an evil laugh coming on. :evil:
