Does anyone here play adult hockey? I'm going to give it a go, wife said football is out. I think I'm athletic enough to make it work. I can't bring myself to play softball. Fishing is boring. Golf is great but not satisfying my ultra-competitive side yet. I'm wondering if anyone here plays. I'm about 6'8" on skates, it's pretty cool.

I just started learning how to skate about 3 weeks ago. I actually just got home from osu ice rink for their 8 to 10 public skate. I have some friends that play and they talked me and another friend into trying it. I'm hooked. 3 weeks ago I was hugging the boards and now I've almost got my hockey stop down. Are you good on skates yet? I'm trying to get the money together for all my gear so I can start going to the stick and pucks. It seems like everything cost $50. All i have so far are skates. Here's in the OSU ice rink homepage with schedules and the Chillers.

Chiller Public Skate

I try and hit the OSU public skates on weds. nights and sun. nights and the ice haus for the mon/weds noon skates. Maybe I'll see you up there sometime.

Thanks for the advice, DA. I think I'm going the Ice Hockey route considering I just bought skates, though. Kinda wish I would've posted this sooner, but I'm excited to get on the ice more.

Slick, I don't have the complete balance-thingy down yet, but I'm not on the boards. Simply put, I still wobble every now and again. I can turn and get a decent speed going. It kills my insteps, though (the arches of my feet). I don't know if that is normal, I hear that it will get better once I get my own skates and break them in. Not sure how to stop, but I am getting better at the other things. Can't wait to learn to skate backwards. My buddy has played his entire life, his brother was an injury away from going to the NHL. He makes me feel like Bambi for sure when we go together to open skate.
The more I learn about it the more I wonder why it isn't more popular. It's so intriguing. The gold medal game this morning was awesome if you got a chance to watch it. I can't wait to get out and play. I have another friend who took it up a couple of years ago, never tried to learn to skate first and get this- he just went out and started playing. He said his first shift he tried to hop the boards and fell flat on his back. Funny stuff. Everyone stopped playing and started laughing
We're thinking of starting a "D-League" team at the end of this year if you are interested. We're aiming for the first season following college football season's end. I want to be proficient before I start playing. I'll probably play some Drop-Ins for a while once I get comfortable with skating and then the Stick-and-Pucks. I'm going to try to sponsor the team (around half of the jersey costs) through my company.

Hints...

Tape the shit out of your ankles, makes you less wobbley.

Buy a long stick, don't cut it down much. It will make you a tripod and more stable. Also you don't have to be as close to your man to whack him or deflect the puck.

Skate at 70% speed. Most nubies try to go all out and do not have the skating ability to stop or turn at fast speeds. You wll be much more and effective passing and covering your guy if you are under control.

Try and control the front of the net at both ends, it is where all the action happens.

Most importantly always hack at the goalie when the ref ain't looking.

I'd still buy rollerblades and go for the Roller Hockey bit first.
1. You can still use your pads (girdle, shin guards, elbow pads, and helmet) for both sports. You don't need shoulder pads for roller hockey.
2. Roller Blades aren't all that expensive. Much less than the cost difference of joining an ice team for one session.
3. Roller Hockey cost me about $75 per session. Compare that to the $200-$300 per session in Ice Hockey (I believe it might be more).
4. You get more playing time in Roller Hockey - it also teaches decent fundamentals and techniques for skating.

I *personally* wouldn't join an Ice team before I knew how to handle a stick fairly well, skate backwards proficiently, and knew hockey strategies well.

Roller teams will tend to be more on your level, a decent "E" league team will be more on your level than a D league team in Ice Hockey (D league is the lowest level in Ice IIRC).
(a D league team in Ice Hockey is more like an advanced C league or B level team in Roller hockey).

Ice teams will have 15-18 players whereas a Roller Hockey team will have 7-10 players.

You can use your Ice skates to learn how to skate on Ice, but if you want learn to play I strongly suggest Roller first.

Your me about a week and a half ago or so. I'm pretty excited about starting to learn how to stop and slow down since that was the one thing holding me back from being able to get speed when the rink is busy. I would of felt bad if I would have plowed through one of those fearless five year olds that are out there making me look bad during the weekend and night skates. The best advice I can give is to go to one of the noon skates during the week if you can. At the Ice Haus there is never more than 6 people on mon. or wed. Oh, and I had the arches thing happening too. I went and got new skates right after the first time I skated. It only took about 3 sessions to break em' in, but at first I was cursing the clerk who I was sure had lied to me when he told me I needed to get skates a size small. Now though I'm skating up to two hours at a time with no pain at all.

I played before. But gave the sport up. Here is a pic of me...

Nah but really, I have played. It is not a easy sport by any means. Your going to take alot of hits and at first your not going to like it because your not used to it.

If you ever played football, I compare that to the level of hitting. Just a little above that.

If you did play football and didn't like it, then I suggest you stay away from any type of hockey.

Thanks for the advice, TG05. :smash: Now here's some advice for you- don't give anyone advice on anything but swimming until you are 25.

Good points, DA. Thank you for the suggestions. Like I said, I was planning on playing the first session after football season, so I might do that until then.

Slick, that's good to hear. I was pretty darn nervous that I had something wrong with my feet or something. We went on Saturday night... bad choice. There was about 100 people on the ice, maybe more. It was tough. There was some Chinese figure skater showing off in the middle. That kind of freaked me out because he came out of no where on some jump twist crap and landed on my shoulders. He said something about loving me a long time. I saw a few of those kids that we skating around like they were tough shit. One smiled at me as he skated past and called me a polar bear on blades. I checked him into the boards. When he was bleeding on the ice he said "You went to ONU, right?" That kind of made me feel bad.

Just so you know teddy some times it is okay not to post. You don't have to give an opinion on everything. Just walk away

Ohh and once more thing...the floor hockey that you play in gym isn't what he is talking about. He is talking about big boy real hockey with ice and skates.

wait.....it came to me thats how you got the concussion isn't it? you tried to dive into an ice rink., Is that what happen?

I played in the Chiller adult league's about 3 years ago, stopped because I'm not that good on ice, and it was pretty expensive.

I was not aware that there were adult Roller Hockey leagues in Columbus. I used to play Roller Hockey all the time in HS and College, and would love to get back into it. DA, could I get a little more info than what the website gives?

To add here fellas....this is a D LEAGUE. There will be no checking and everybody is a beginner. Go out and have fun. If there is someone who can actually play, he does not belong there.

Teddy G. It isn't violent untill you get good at it. It isn't like you can line someone up and drill them if you aren't a good skater. That normally does not happen till you have been playing for a number of years.

Don't get the roller blades go with the real McCoy. Screw that GenX crap.

If you need a ringer let me know.

I have never played and have only been on skates twice in my life. All I know is there are quite a few people in this area who do the adult hockey leagues and they absolutely love it. There are leagues running pretty much 24 hours a day here in michigan. If you can afford it I think you have found a sport for life.
