Players leaving the court early

On a side note, I think it's BS that a team can get a technical because of their fans. Anyone know of any instances where something like this has cost/nearly cost a team a game?

The home team is responsible for security. According to the announcers last night, this has happened at least once and maybe even twice at FSU before, which makes last night's incident even more inexcusable.

I'll be honest-I'm a Duke fan and in no way am I trying to take away from FSU's victory, as the game was effectively over at that point They got outplayed and lost-simple as that.

There's no excuse for what happened after the game was sealed though. It isn't a safe environment for an opposing team to be in when hundreds of students are jumping over the announcer's table and sprinting onto the court, a decent number of them likely drunk. Coach K did what he had to do, and hopefully now FSU will finally get some security measures in place so that crap like this doesn't happen again. I guess it should come as no surprise, however, that the vast majority of the students at one of the easiest publics to get into cannot read the clock.

I do think Duke thinks they are better than everybody else, but as a top team sometimes you need that and sometimes you need to know that you can lose any game. i dont blame the duke team for leaving early, but i dont agree with it either.

they shook FSU's hands before leaving which helps their case a little more

I have never seen any other top program leave the court even though they knew the other team was going to rush the court. Last year when tOSU beat the illini, they knew we were going to rush the court and they stayed. I think Coach K is just paranoid thinks everyone is out to bash his dukies which it should be.

FSU players left the bench before the game was over......that is why the technical was called according to the announcers last night, although Mike Patrick and Dick Vitale miss a lot of what is going on
Was that the case? I guess Patrick and Vitale missed that, altough I can understand why with all the madness. Like they said last night... the kids are jumping right on top of them.

having your entire arena on the floor for quite a while should not be legal...

Of course it shouldn't, just don't penalize the team. I would hate to see the kid's hard work and execution be ruined by the fans, something they have no control over.

for clarification, that is the first time in FSU history that the court has been stormed before the clock ran out. The court has been stormed several times in recent history though, including an upset of Duke at home 2 of the last 4 years. Duke stormed the court this year too, against Virginia Tech after Dockery made the 3/4 floor shot to win th egame.....so people from Duke putting down FSU for allowing the court to be stormed are being hypocritical.......the fans clearly messed by not the letting the clock run completely out, but the time-keeper really blew it by running the clock down to 0.00 and allowing the students to think the game was over

ACC says Seminoles fans rushing floor ‘unfortunate’

Friday, March 03, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford called it "unfortunate" that fans stormed the court near the end of the Duke-Florida State game but credited referees for handling the situation.

With 1.7 seconds left in Florida State’s 79-74 upset of top-ranked Duke on Wednesday night, Seminoles fans stormed the court and interrupted play. A technical foul was assessed to the home team, but it didn’t prevent Florida State’s second victory in three years over Duke.

Unlike the Southeastern Conference, the ACC doesn’t have the authority to penalize its members for fan behavior, so Swofford only issued a statement yesterday.

"Crowd control in all of our sports is an issue that our schools take seriously and is discussed on an ongoing basis," Swofford said. "The safety of players, coaches and fans must always be the primary concern of any sporting event."

Tennessee was fined $5,000 by the SEC in January after fans rushed the court following the Volunteers’ victory over then-No. 2 Florida. Arkansas received the same punishment last week after a victory over the Gators, even though only 20-25 fans left the stands.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski left five players on the court for the final 1.7 seconds and sent the remaining players to the locker room.
"I would think that security is not ready for that type of thing," Krzyzewski said after the game. "We weren’t going to win the basketball game, the game was basically over, so why put those kids in harm’s way?"
