I looked at the reviews at Best Buy.com on the TV. Overall got VERY good results, only negative was mostly the sound (speakers) which are on the back side underneath the TV.

That being said, I've never heard of MAJOR problems with Plasma's and their power board issues. I didn't get the BB protection plan (4yrs) because imo, it's a rip off. However, I do have 30 days from yesterday to purchase it, so I guess I'll give it some thought.

And I could always return it and get a different TV (which I would then switch to LCD).

Samsung

There is a ton of reports out there. The electronics message boards are full of similar.

Not saying that yours will go bad. I am also one not to purchase the extended warranties. But in this case I would seriously think about it.

Is this just with Sammy Plasma's or both Plasma's and LCD's? I have had a Sammy 32" for 2 years now, and absolutely NO problems.

Both. From what I have read there is a bad batch of capacitors that fail at a very high rate. Now you can try and replace them individually if you can spot the bulge or if they are leaking. If not, you have to replace the entire power board.

The board itself is about $200 and then you have to install.

These TV's are great when they are running and will get very high satisfaction rates initially, but they are failing at a higher rate once you hit the year mark.

Even though they are more expensive and don't have the absolute best picture, Sony has the best reliability record. That's where my money is going. I hate dealing with tv problems. Currently have a Panasonic and it's crap. Was never right from day one.

There are a lot of links on the internet for television picture, reliability, etc. One of the most popular is Consumer Reports. Sadly I cannot link their stuff since it takes a subscription. Yet to sum it up, all the major manufacturers are very, very similar in reliability. Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, Sharp. and Pioneer (although they are now gone) are all very close to one another (normally about 1% separates them). LG and Toshiba are at the next level, but also close.

Here is one I can link, but not Consumer Reports. It's from PC Mag and less than a year old. Sony is not the best. In the end though, it really just shows how similar the major brands really are. Consumer Reports numbers, which I cannot link, are very similar.

BTW....if your tv was never right from day 1, why in the hell did you not return it? In fact, I bought a Sony that was not right from day 1. I returned it, and ended up getting a Pioneer. I couldn't be happier with my Pioneer. Too bad they are done making plasmas.

Well after having the tv for a few days, I'm taking it back. It gets images burnt in the screen in about 5 minutes (ESPN logo is really bad). The tv got so unbelievably hot last night it made my bedroom almost unbearable to sleep in. I'm getting a 46" or 47" lg. Any suggestions on bigger 46-55" lcds??

It should have a screen burn protection in the options..It will remove the logo, but at the same time i'd take it back ASAP..No way it should be that hot IMO..Future problems will ensue.

Yeah that's exactly what i thought. I've never seen a tv get so hot in my life. And when it changed the temperature in my room dramatically, I knew that the tv will be prone to problems in the future. I'll take a look at the lcds they have in stock on Friday.

You can feel the heat radiating from my panasonic plasma screen, but I never noticed it besides holding my hand right in front of it.

Burn in technology has improved immensely over the years. My dads 06 samsung plasma suffered bad burn in almost immediately without leaving it on too long, just watching espn infrequently with their side bars before widescreen content was common.

Also, after a year it started malfunctioning. Bright white highlights, like sun reflections, would go nuts, filled with dancing colored dots. Soon afterwards, those dots appeared everywhere. They put off repairing it for a long time, long enough that bestbuy said they no longer had the part to repair it, so they get a brand new tv. The personal service protection plan paid off.
