Pittsburgh Steelers (official thread)

Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger says Monday Night Football vs. Cleveland Browns likely his last game at Heinz Field

Acknowledging that he doesn't speak in "definites" or "guarantees," Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said that Monday night against the Browns will likely be his final home regular-season game with the franchise.

Sounds like Roethlisberger is calling it a career after this season.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger, QB
Current Hall of Fame "lock"? Yes
  • Big Ben has enjoyed both individual and team success
A six-time Pro Bowler as well as the 2004 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Roethlisberger is also one of just nine quarterbacks in league history to lead his team to three Super Bowls. Seven of those quarterbacks are members of the Hall of Fame, while Tom Brady, the only other active member of that elite club, will be inducted as soon as he is eligible. Big Big's place among the league's all-time leading passers (he's eighth all-time in passing yards and ninth in touchdown passes) along with his gaudy win-loss record (his 157 wins is the sixth-highest total in league history) makes him a lock for future enshrinement. A MVP award is the only thing missing as far as individual achievements are concerned.

How much do you think the original "Steel Curtain" banner would sell for today?

Iconic Steel Curtain Banner Brings $57,500

February 7, 2011

A hand-painted banner created during the high point of the Pittsburgh Steelers 1970s dynasty and displayed regularly at Three Rivers Stadium sold for $57,500 in the official Super Bowl XLV auction on Saturday in Dallas.

The banner, featuring members of the Steel Curtain defensive line, is instantly recognizable to fans who have seen it countless times on TV, in NFL Films videos and in print. It was purchased by a “die hard Steelers fan who wishes to remain anonymous” according to reports.

Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger officially announces his retirement from the NFL

It was a move many anticipated, but it's now official. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced on Thursday that he's retiring at the age of 39. The No. 11 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Miami University won two Super Bowls in Pittsburgh and was a six-time Pro Bowler.

"Big Ben" played in 249 regular-season games, 23 postseason games and three Super Bowls. He retires while sitting at No. 5 on the all-time passing list with 64,088 yards -- one spot behind Brett Favre and right above Philip Rivers. The 2004 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year made his mark on the Steelers immediately, as he led Pittsburgh to the most wins ever recorded by a rookie with 15. Later, he became the fourth quarterback in NFL history to win 100 games in the first 150 starts of his career. Roethlisberger also holds the NFL record for most career 500-yard passing games with four.

Roethlisberger announced his decision to retire on Twitter:

Will Dwayne Haskins step up his game and earn the staring QB position now?

Trade rumors involving Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson have gone on for more than one year despite controversy surrounding the star quarterback, but one team many see in the market for a player at the position is reportedly out of the running. The Pittsburgh Steelers are not interested in Watson, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Doesn't surprise me at all, I'd be surprised if the Steelers did go after him.

Steelers signing Mitchell Trubisky: Former Bears first-rounder, Bills backup agrees to reported two-year deal

The Steelers have taken their first notable swing at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement, and it involves a former first-round pick. One hour into the NFL's legal tampering period Monday, Pittsburgh has agreed to terms with former Bears and Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones has confirmed. ESPN and NFL Media report the deal is for two years. The Steelers were interested in a potential trade for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, per Ian Rapoport, but will instead turn to Trubisky as their veteran option under center.

Mike Tomlin breaks up kids fighting in the street and invites them to Steelers practice

Mike Tomlin was a real-life hero to several young men in the Pittsburgh area. Not only did the Steelers head coach break up a fight they were having in the street, but he ended up befriending them and actually inviting them to practice.

Talk about awesome. This is the type of move that not only makes a fan for life, but can change the direction of someone's life.

The story comes from NFL insider Jay Glazer, who reports that Tomlin was driving somewhere when he saw a group of kids fighting in front of him. He got out of the car, to the shock of the kids, and rather than yell at them, chide them, or get them in trouble...the NFL head coach "spent the next few hours with the kids," per Glazer.

That would be great enough from an NFL head coach and plenty noteworthy, but then Tomlin stepped his hero game up a notch.

Tomlin invited the local kids to Steelers practice where they were able to run drills with running back Najee Harris and get coaching from their new best buddy.

Makes you wonder how many other NFL head coaches (if any) would have done that.
