Pittsburgh Pirates 2014 (Jake's random thoughts)

Swept in Milwaukee...some things never change. One way or another, the Bucs will find a way to lose in Miller Park. The only real positive was how well Volquez pitched again, only to be let down by his mates late in the game.

6-6 now.

Well, the Bucs are looking every bit like the 4th best team in a 5 team division. They're 3rd in homers in the NL but there's rarely anyone on base when they hit them. It's feast or famine, with not enough feast. Volquez has been a pleasant surprise but Wandy looks done and the other guys have been just okay. Then there's Grilli, who may be regressing to his pre-Pittsburgh form.

Off to St. Louis, at 9-14.

Got through first 26 - all against the Central division - with 10 wins, the closer on the DL, the starting catcher on the DL, a lead off hitter leading the NL in strike outs and a clean up hitter batting .176. Seems like old times. :argh:

Now it's time for some interleague play. The Bucs had MLB's best record in IL last year, but nothing about this season (so far) feels like last year.

If it wasn't for MLB's goofy financial system he would already be there. They have about $20 million reasons and 2 years to leave him in Indy until June, so you're probably going to be stashing him awhile. :wink2:

The truth is, one guy isn't going to turn this team around. Several guys need to step up their games. I just hope when he gets the call he starts off better than Springer.

hey if the reds and pirates combined rosters they may be able to score 4+ runs a game!

Finally, the Bucs show a pulse. After going a week without hitting a homer they blast two off Sergio Santos in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with a win over the Blue Jays. It's only one game but it beats the fuck out of another loss. :pirate:

After finishing over .500 for May the Bucs are treading water. Cole and Walker hitting the DL won't help but long-awaited prospect Gregory Polanco gets the call tonight.

Still, I'm more concerned about the rotation than anything else the rest of the way. Liriano looks like the version from 2007-12 and does anyone trust Volquez?

Bucs finally get over .500 and now make a trade. The Angels and Pirates swapped struggling former closers Jason Grilli and Ernesto Frieri. I like it, mostly because Frieri is about 9 years younger. Both guys probably needed a change of scenery.

Hallelujah! The Bucs finally swept a series. They've been winning a lot of them the last month, though, and are now a season-best six games over .500 at 47-41. :pirate:

Cutch injured, Walker injured, Pedro has become useless, and the first base platoon is garbage. Still, the Bucs are a season-best 9 games over .500 after last night's win.

Go figure. :pirate:
