Pittsburgh Pirates 2014 (Jake's random thoughts)

  • While AJ Burnett contemplates his future the Bucs took a 1 year flier on Edinson Volquez, hoping to turn him around the way Francisco Liriano did in 2013. It'll be interesting to see if Liriano can repeat that performance in 2014, or does he regress back to his previous form.

Garrett Jones is gone (Marlins), Clint Barmes comes back for one more year (hopefully as a utility man, not the starting SS), and the only 1B on the roster is Gaby Sanchez. Rumors swirling that Pittsburgh has been engaging in talks with the Mets about Ike Davis. I'd take a shot on him if the price isn't steep.

Too many local Bucs fans seem to think it is a given that the Pirates will win (at least) 94 games again in 2014, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them slide back a little. The run production must improve because I doubt the pitching staff can repeat last season's numbers. Another winning season, minimum, would be acceptable to me. Whether that would be enough to make the playoffs again remains to be seen.

    Beat 'em, Bucs! :pirate:

Burnett doesn't appear to be playing for anyone (as suspected) and no first baseman was signed. Looks like the Bucs are going with what they have, which isn't terrible. The farm system is still rated in the top 5 by just about every publication. It will still take remarkable seasons by a number of players - again - to contend this year.

Burnett signed with Philly for $16 million - good for him, too much for me - but the bigger concern is Gaby fucking Sanchez is the full time first baseman. Please tell me we're going to make a move here.

It's a long, long, long season but trouncing the Cardinals 12-2 in PNC Park the first meeting of the year feels good. Pedro Alvarez had a monster game, Gerrit Cole was strong, and the Cards spent some time whining to the umps. :gagnam:

I don't like the Cardinals, but I respect them. They've been the best team in the division for awhile - one of the top teams in baseball - so if the Bucs can play with them, they can play with anyone. :pirate:

Jameson Tailon is going to have Tommy John surgery.

Think I wrote about him in last year's Pirates thread when I got to see him pitch for the AAA Indy Indians- basically the kid is a damn good pitching prospect. Bad break for the Pirates.

Edinson Volquez makes his first start as a Pirate, going 5.2 innings and allowing 1 run. The Bucs eventually beat Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals, 2-1. :pirate:
