Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

Glad Orpik signed with the pens. I would like to see what Jagr and Naslund can do with Crosby and Malkin at Centers. We don't need all-star wingers to play with those 2 centerman. Hell freakiin malone had a career year playing with Malkin and the year before he couldn't crack the top 2 lines in Pittsburgh.

Penguins still have two roster spots open at the forward position, specifically left wing. Fedotenko and Dupuis are two left wingers. Satan, Sykora, Kennedy, and Godard are each right wingers, filling in the four required. Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Talbot obviously fill in the four centers.

Defense is filled in with Gonchar, Orpik (Thank goodness), Whitney, Gill, Eaton, Letang, Scuderi, and Sydor. This is the problem I have with the way things have worked out. One of those d-men has to be dumped in my opinion, and the best choice is Sydor, since he carries a $2.5mil contract, and since Scuderi frankly has been playing better than him imo.

I'd love to see a salary dump of Sydor to fill the left wing spot. If they don't and Sydor plays well this year, well, I'd be happy to be proven wrong. But, if the Pens don't make a move for another left winger, then I will really be interested in seeing who gets called up from WBS to play for the big boys. Stone would be my guess, since the team desperately needs more power forwards. Tim Brent wouldn't be a bad choice either.

I'd love to see Staal move to Left Wing for the season to get his production going. Staal is not the type of player that makes people around him better, and if you put him with a player like Malkin (Rookie Season) he'll produce. I think ultimately thats the direction they're going to have to go.

Lines will look somthing like this..

Fedetenko-Crosby-Satan
Staal-Malkin-Sykora
Dupuis-Talbot-Kennedy
(??)-Taffe-Goddard

Gonchar-Eaton
Whitney-Orpik
Letang-Gill

(Maybe Scuderi plays in place of Letang)

Also Shero said on his press conference the other day they'd like to dump some salary with Sydor and pick up one more winger through either a trade or free agency. The pens I don't believe are done yet.....

Shero also said that Staal will be counted upon to fill alot of Malone's minutes. What that means, I'm not sure. Personally, I'd love to see him on Malkins wing. I think his talent is clearly wasted by centering the 3rd line. He's big, strong, has a great reach, is a good finisher and plays well along the boards. Let Max center the third line and put JS on the 2nd line.

Penguins have started the season out struggling to score points. There top lines have not meshed well as of yet and they REALLY miss Gonchar and Whitney back on the blue line. Their PP has looked terrible, hopefully they can survive long enough until Whitney comes back.

On the bright side, Tyler Kennedy has looked very good. I think its only a matter of time until Staal-Malkin-Sykora start scoring. They looked pretty good last night. Crosby-Satan should be good too, they just need to find another winger.

LET'S GO PENS!

Staal hasn't gotten used to being in front of the net on the PP. He missed at least 1 golden opportunity last night to get a goal by being in front.

i meant move one of malkin/staal to the wing. likely staal. im not sure he plays well enough on both sides of his body to be a top flight centre. i also do not think in todays world you can have 3 high paid centres long term. staal is tough along the walls and a monster when the pucks in deep. not many could stop malkin/staal cycling in deep.

did staal play much on the pt on the pp?

i was reading work emails and watching (kind of the game last night)

Staal right now is playing on Malkin's wing, kind of replacing Malone. Staal has pretty much takin Malone's spot on the PP as well, down low in front of the goalie. Malkin has been camped out on of the points along with Letang on the 1st unit. Alex Goligoski has also played the point on the power play for the 2nd unit, he's looked pretty good back there for a rookie, he just needs to shoot the puck more. Of all people, Orpik scored our power play goal last night.

Also, that Godard vs Cote fight last night kicked ass.

Malkin had four points in the third period. Hat trick in the last 9 minutes of the game.

Crosby had three in the third as well.

Malkin = MVP so far?

Maybe and I mean MAYBE in the East...but if I had to pick I'd pick Tim Thomas first honestly even though he's only played 14 games or so.....or maybe Alexander Semin from Washington.......Pittsburgh is still a good team without Malkin whereas I don't think Boston would be anywhere near where they are now without Thomas and his hot start. Semin is hurt (which will kill his chances), but the Caps are a completely different team with him and Ovie in the lineup.

Malkin isn't in the top 10 in goals yet so while leading is assists is great, his plus minus and the number of goals scored is going to hold him back.

Is he a candidate? sure thing. But there isn't a front runner right now or anything close to it right now. And you can't forget about Hossa or Zetterburg or even Datsyuk from Detroit. Any of the 3 could get seriously hot at any time given that lineup....
