Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

Darren Dreger is reporting that Pittsburgh and Toronto have agreed to a deal, but the Pens need to clear cap space first.

Toronto gets Luca Caputi, a winger prospect who I figured would play with Malkin next year. Pittsburgh gets Ponikarovsky. Toronto must have lowered their asking price if they could get a prospect who could play in the NHL right now. In an ideal world Caputi is an AHLer right now, but he's almost ready to make the jump.

Kind of getting tired of dumping prospects for rentals though. We need some more permanent solutions.

Dumping prospects for rentals to win now will land Pittsburgh squarely into the cycle experienced by TLM fans in the mid to late 90s and early 00s too.

Except it will ruin your team eventually. Especially if the cap goes down due to the ineptitude of the commish, his cronies and whichever idiot keeps thinking that NBC/VS is a good idea TV-wise.

Luckily our core is good enough to keep us competitive for years.. just going to have to put the team on their shoulders. Not going to work every year. I think Shero feels that we have a legit shot at a repeat and he's willing to sacrifice the future a little for that. I can live with it, as long as this is the last prospect we deal.

We can't expect the traded prospects/young players to all turn out like Erik Christensen and Angelo Esposito. Caputi looked like he could be an answer on the second line. We still have Tangradi and he isn't going anywhere. I expect to see him with Crosby next year.

Pens officially just traded Caputi and Skoula for Ponikarovsky.

Glad Skoula is gone. He was fucking worthless. Leopold trade makes more sense now. McKee likely as our 7th d-man. A puck mover on every defensive pairing. I figure Toronto will waive Skoula soon. He was just because the Pens needed to dump salary.

Now if we need offense we can have a decent amount of flexibility.

Penguins beat the Sabres tonight. I think we should all argue about it.

I don't know what I was talking about a minute ago, we already had a puck mover on every pairing. Lines will probably be:

Kunitz - Crosby - Guerin
Ponikarovsky - Malkin - Fedotenko
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy
Dupuis - Talbot - Rupp
Adams/Godard

Orpik - Letang
Gonchar - Leopold
Goligoski - Eaton
McKee/Lovejoy

Honestly, pretty dangerous lineup IMO. We can finally keep Dupuis in the bottom six where he excels. Bill Guerin is no longer going to get first line power play duty!

Trading Luca Caputi became a luxury available to the Penguins after they acquired the similarly talented Eric Tangradi in the Ryan Whitney deal from the previous year. Actually, they STOLE Eric Tangradi and Chris Kunitz for Ryan Whitney. I saw Luca Caputi play in the NHL and I wasn't too impressed. Nick Johnson should be a great winger next to either Crosby or Malkin. He's a +18 at the NHL level and he has an NHL body. Luca Caputi may never put the necessary weight on to be a force at the NHL level.

This wasn't a great trade by the Penguins. It was a good trade by the Penguins. They filled a hole with an expendable piece from the farm system. And, trust me, as solid as Caputi may end up being, he was still quite expendable.

Kunitz - Crosby - Malkin
Fedotenko/Dupuis - Malkin - Ponikarovsky
Cooke - Staal - Kennedy
Fedotenko/Dupuis - Talbot - Rupp
Adams
(Godard IR)

Gonchar - Eaton
Letang - Orpik
Goligoski - Leopold

Fleury
Johnson

Now that looks like a team.

You think they'll start double shifting Malkin with Crosby and just drop Guerin? We can only wish.

I agree with what you said about Caputi, but if he adds weight I can see him being a solid winger for one of our centers. That's pretty valuable. But I agree that he is expendable. I was forgetting about Nick Johnson.

The Pens are trying to make hay while the sun shines. It's unlikely they'll be able to keep Fleury, Crosby AND Malkin together for their entire careers. With a legit shot at a 3rd Cup Finals and back to back Stanleys I'm fine with the moves made the last couple years, even if it leads to a few lean ones down the road.

I agree.

However, Crosby seems like the kind of player to take a big paycut for the betterment of the team. We'll see.. hopefully Shero can do something and keep the core together.

Ponikarovsky with a goal and an assist in two games.

EDIT: Cooke is probably getting suspended btw. Dirty hit on Savard.. deserves a suspension.
It wasn't a dirty hit. That's why he wasn't suspended. I was at the game and the crowd's thoughts and prayers were focused on Savard, but the bottom line is that Cooke's feet didn't leave the ice and he hit Savard with his shoulder.

It will be illegal next year.
