Strengths: The Penguins greatest strength lies on the blue line, with a solid group of both offensive-minded and defensively responsible defensemen. Kristopher Letang headlines both groups, bringing exceptional offensive skill with solid two-way play. Alex Goligoski is in a more offensive mold. Carl Sneep and Brian Strait bring strong play in their own end to the table. The Pens also have a deep group of centermen, headed up by Ryan Stone. Goaltending has emerged as a burgeoning strength, largely on the back of Bobby Goepfert's breakout season.
Weaknesses: Pittsburgh's top-end skill among forwards took a plummet after the graduation of their top two prospects, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal. While Jonathan Filewich and Tyler Kennedy have posted modest offensive numbers, they are in a minority up front, among a group that is already thin.
Top Five Prospects: Kristopher Letang (D), Alex Goligoski (D), Jonathan Filewich (RW), Ryan Stone (C), Carl Sneep (D)
Key Graduates: Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Colby Armstrong

NHL.com - Trophies

The general consensus is that this will be the first of many. Sidney Crosby won his first Art Ross Trophy this season as the NHL’s leading scorer, and it will likely be the first of many scoring titles, awards, trophies and first-place ribbons the 19-year-old collects before his limitless career is over. Crosby, who was recently named captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, scored 120 points in his sophomore season and is also a finalist for the Hart Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s most valuable player.
More impressive than what Crosby’s already accomplished is that he’s done it at such a young age. Just wait until he’s in his mid-20’s. That’s when Crosby figures to be in the prime of his career.

In what could prove for other NHL teams to be an ominous harbinger of future success, two Pittsburgh Penguins forwards, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal, along with Paul Stastny of the Colorado Avalanche, are the finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy that goes to the NHL rookie of the year. Malkin and Staal joined the Penguins the year after Sidney Crosby finished second to Alexander Ovechkin in 2006 Calder voting. They made major contributions to a large cast of young Penguins who executed the fourth-greatest single-season turnaround in league history, improving 47 points from a year ago. The Penguins went from third-worst team in the Eastern Conference to finishing two points behind the New Jersey Devils for the Atlantic Division crown.
"It's pretty exciting for the city of Pittsburgh and this team that we've got two great talents like that for the team to build a group around," Penguins right wing Colby Armstrong told reporters. "It's pretty exiting. They are so young, too."

Finally back where they belong. I must admit I haven't watched much hockey after Lemieux retired and they let Jagr go. I'm still waiting on the next Samuelson to emerge and become the enforcer Sid will need to stay "healthy" and in the game for many years to come. The two rookies looked outstanding this year. I cant wait for the Pens to come to Phoenix.
