Actually, I'll correct myself...it was his 50th birthday party I am thinking of...

All I know is I have a hard time blaming the kids when there is such hypocrisy throughout the entire governing body...there are rules after rules after rules and half of them are senseless.

Example, Rick Majerus was cited for violations when he drove one of his own players to the airport after one of the young man's parents died suddenly. Majerus bought the kid something to eat at the airport and sat with him until his plane left...the NCAA didn't care and cited him.

Now contrast that w/Zibby being allowed to box for tons of money and the BSU kid who isn't allowed to knit ... and the entire system emerges as being completely ridiculous.

I think the NCAA needs to be probed for "Stupidity Rules", the NCAA should not be allowed to have such authority over family matters. What next, they gonna tell ya when and where you can take a dump?! I understand some of the NCAA rules, but some are waaaayy out in left field.

AKRON Two Ohio State players left a fundraiser meant to help their families attend the upcoming national championship game because of concerns the benefit violated NCAA rules, the team?s offensive coordinator said.
Running backs Antonio Pittman and Chris Wells, both of Akron, were at the spaghetti dinner fundraiser Saturday when Wells? mother called Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Jim Bollman to explain the situation. Bollman said in a published report that he informed her that National Collegiate Athletic Association rules do not allow benefit dinners for players? families, and he advised her to have Wells and Pittman leave, which they did.

Great something else for ESPN to bring up and make us look bad. I'm sure the Florida boards are already calling us cheats. In this case no harm no foul though. The families and players both did the right thing to prevent any form of rule infraction.

Actually, most of the posters at Swamp Gas even see this as minor. Most of them think parents should have a way to raise money to go to the games. A couple of Gator fans said they'd even send the Beanies and the Pittmans money for travel if they could.

Unless the players sent pictures or other things to be used to advertise the event as a fundraiser, I think they will be cleared. That being said the NCAA makes rules up as they go, so Mo Wells better be ready. If the players thought they were just going to a dinner at a church they hould be OK.

i just read over the wire that all the money raised at the dinner has been given to various charities. fortunately, a band has reissued an album to raise money for the parents, which the ncaa has no problem with:
