That dog must have been seriously hopped up on paint chips, PCP, Crack, or some combination to keep going back after it enough to look that bad.

My dog had an encounter with a porcupine about 4 years ago.
We have a cabin in Pa. We went golfing one day and left the dog locked in the back , screened in porch. When we got back, he was walking around (slowly) so we knew something was wrong. Apparently, the dog saw 'porky' and jumped through the screen. He's a big dog (Mastiff), but got pretty beat up in the fight. His whole mouth was filled with quills, as was his neck and face. His neck was swelled up so much, the vet had to put him out to get the quills out. We continued finding quills in his coat for the next month. He also had a horrible oder coming from him for the next week. It wasn't as bad as the pitbull, but it was still pretty nasty. Those quills are barbed perfectly and are not easy to remove.
