Pink Floyd to re-release their music. All of it.

I haven't bought a CD in many years, but I may have to seriously reconsider that after reading this. All of their songs, in one set, plus artwork.... that's a hell of a thing to have.

Pink Floyd in race against time to reissue albums

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The mammoth CD reissue program undertaken by Pink Floyd is an acknowledgment that the era of physical CDs and lavish artwork is coming to an end, as fans increasingly opt to download music digitally, drummer Nick Mason said on Wednesday.

Two years after the Beatles unveiled a similar program, the British progressive rock band is reissuing digitally remastered versions of all 14 of its studio albums, both individually and as a boxed set on September 26.

But Pink Floyd is doing something the Beatles never did, to the disappointment of Fab Four fans. Three albums will also be reissued with plenty of rarities in multi-disc versions. Revised and expanded artwork was a heavy priority for a band with a history of visual innovation.

"There is a slight sense that we are coming to the end of the period where people will buy the physical record with all the packaging and the information and so on," Mason, 67, told Reuters at the Hollywood outpost of the band's EMI Records label.

"I think it's really important to try and have a last go at that, because if we do end up just downloading everything from now on it would be a shame if there wasn't on record all that good artwork and the things that went with it."

Pink Floyd in race against time to reissue albums

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The mammoth CD reissue program undertaken by Pink Floyd is an acknowledgment that the era of physical CDs and lavish artwork is coming to an end, and Roger Waters would like to make some more money reselling the same catalog of albums you already bought fourteen times before finally releasing the rights to Korean car manufacturers for use in TV commercials. Besides which, suing David Gilmour, EMI, and all his ex-wives every three years has gotten quite expensive.

OK ... so six-disc Dark Side, five-disc Wish You Were Here (apparently they found parts X-XLVII) and a seven-disc version of the Wall?

Honestly, that's shameful how transparent of a cash grab it is.

But what pisses me off even more is that these aren't the albums I want deluxified. Give me a three-disc version of Animals, or a seven-disc version of Meddle, with six CDs containing nothing but a 450 minute long version of Echoes! Now that I'd buy.

Sure it is a cash grab. I'll still probably buy them because they include a lot of unreleased recordings and blu-ray concert footage.

The article also states that expanded versions of other albums are in the works.

I've never owned a Floyd album although I do enjoy a number of songs. Personally, I couldn't care less about The Wall movie. Any suggestions on a complete PF neophyte for their quintessential album (not just marketed as such) to first listen to?

They have changed so much as a group over the years it's really tough to just pick out one to start with. Probably start from the beginning with Piper if you are interested in seeing how the group developed over time. Start with Dark Side and go to The Final Cut if you want to start with the more popular songs. That would be an easier intro if you are not sure you will like their stuff. This is probably the way most people got into Pink Floyd. Then you can revisit their earlier stuff. Up to you. The earlier stuff can be a little more of an acquired taste since they experimented a lot. Still good stuff though. I would certainly leave anything after The Final Cut for last. After Waters left it's not really the same. Again, still some good stuff in there. Yet not really the quintessential Pink Floyd by any stretch.

The only CD I have is Dark Side of the Moon. It is very good.

I remember the flying pig over Ohio Stadium my senior year at tOSU, but after the all day pre concert party at my Neil Avenue apartment I scarcely remember the walk to the Stadium and the show that night.

I know I had a damn good time, though.

Muffler, the way to introduce yourself to Pink Floyd is:

Dark Side of the Moon
The Wall
The Final Cut
Wish You Were Here
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Animals

That is certainly not in order of release, and won't give you an idea of the evolution of their music, so don't expect that. That list is a fair guess of their music in order from more commercially recognizable (and graspable for a neophyte) down to their more esoteric stuff.

I'm intrigued by this - cash grab as it may be. I listened to tons of Floyd at tOSU and saw them at Ohio Stadium in 95ish, yet somehow I've only managed to purchase Wish You Were Here over the years. Now that I think of it I really miss Meddle (Esp Echoes), Animals, Dark Side, etc. Not sure I'd get the whole shebang, but a few definitive album releases will be well received in my collection.

Very similar to what I was stating. You can go in order from Dark Side to The Final Cut and then to the earlier stuff (starting with Piper) and it's very close to the same thing. That is probably the most common way people get into Floyd. Good list though. Yet I still wouldn't call Animals esoteric. The stuff from Piper up to but not including Dark Side has some really interesting stuff in it, and I would say that is the more esoteric stuff.

They are my favorite band, with the Beatles a very close 1A.
