It is about time that shit gets exposed. Unfortunately the media has been pulling this shit a lot longer than most people think. Here is an early example.

thats the trick though isn't it? the moral of the story is you can make any sensational claim you wish and by the time anyway proves you wrong. your story has been published and has already been accepted as gospel by the masses. even after the rebuttle comes out, it never gets the media saturation the original (incorrect) story did. even if by some miracle it does, the average person will not completely write off the original story.
so in the end, no matter how much of a flat out lie you told. it will still reach its target audience, get the reaction you want in the short term, and no matter how much evidence there is to refute it, will always have a lasting impression on your audience.
oh and outside of saying, "sorry, my bad" there is no punishment.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Two missiles fired by Israeli aircraft early Sunday morning hit an armored car belonging to the Reuters news agency and wounded a television cameraman inside, Palestinian witnesses said.
The Israeli army said it was checking the report.
According to witnesses, the cameraman was filming an Israeli raid in Gaza near the Karni crossing when the vehicle was hit.
