Philadelphia Eagles (official thread)

Buckeye in Blacksburg
What the hell were they smoking today? Kevin Kolb with their first pick? A backup quarterback is the first position they address with so many quality players on the board? Damn, I despise this pick.

Victor Abiamiri???? Over Quentin Moses? Trading out of the first round?

What a disapointing day.

The Eagles are going back to a time when green was green

Those handsome green get-ups you see above are what the Philadelphia Eagles will be wearing on opening weekend against the Green Bay Packers. They call it "kelly green," as if this is the shade of green that's weird, and not this one.

It's part of the Eagles' effort to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their last NFL championship in 1960. They also won it in 1948 and 1949, all pre-Super Bowl days.

I like the look. I file this one under "uniform changes that need to be made permanent." There's nothing necessarily wrong with the current Eagles look, but they sort of epitomize a modern, trend-embracing theme in sports uniforms.

D Battery Elected To Philadelphia Sports Hall Of Fame

PHILADELPHIA?A voting panel of journalists and prominent sports figures elected the D battery to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Sunday, honoring the alkaline storage cell?s many achievements in pelting players from visiting teams. ?The D battery is as synonymous with Philadelphia sports as intoxicated fistfights, cheering for a severely injured player, or intentionally vomiting on a child,? said Philadelphia sportswriter Ray Didinger, adding that the Hall of Fame plans to install an interactive exhibit that allows children to throw batteries at life-size cutouts of rival athletes. ?Whipping the D battery at opposing players, coaches, or dumbshit referees is a crucial part of the experience for Philly fans. No other projectile has had the same impact on Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, or 76ers games. The D battery is an icon, representing the very best of Philly.? The D battery will be inducted into the Philadelphia Hall of Fame by longtime Eagles season ticket holder Drunk Tony, where it will join two of last year?s inductees, the glass beer bottle and the concept of booing.

McCoy challenges “old man” Vick to race, and gets smoked

Eagles safety Colt Anderson has posted the basic details on Twitter: quarterback Mike Vick and running back LeSean McCoy raced in practice on Thursday, and Vick won.

But there’s more to the story, which we’ve obtained from a league source with knowledge of the situation.

McCoy had been riding Vick for weeks, calling him “old man” and challenging Vick to a footrace. Vick had been laughing it off, until today.

Today, Vick had enough. So he asked coach Chip Kelly if he could accept McCoy’s invitation. Kelly agreed.

So they lined up and took off, and Vick didn’t just beat McCoy. Vick smoked McCoy by roughly five yards over a 40-yard distance, and their teammates went nuts.

It has no direct relevance to the fate of the 2013 Eagles, but it proves that the “old man” can still move, which is bad news for any defense facing him this year.

No word on whether McCoy was beaten to death by Vick after the race.......

He could move last year, but you can't run every play in the NFL as a QB or you'll get killed. The moment he has to throw the ball, the Iggles are at a big disadvantage.

Pretty detailed account of Jackson's possible connections to the Crips.

Despite Jackson's name having come up in connection with two gang-related murders involving Crips, Crosson said police have no hard evidence that Jackson is a member of the gang, which was formed in the late 1960’s and has an estimated 35,000 members across the country. Crosson said, however, the Jackson routinely flashes Crip gang signs in photos on social media -- and even on television during an NFL game.
"You don't want to see anybody throwing up gang signs like he did in the Redskins game last year," Crosson said. "Those were neighborhood Crip gang signs and he flashed them during a game. He may not be affiliated with the gang, but they don't [ordinarily] take kindly to those not in the gang throwing up those gang signs."

Pete Carroll says Chip Kelly knows what he’s doing

A rash of unpredictable offseason moves has caused many Eagles fans to question the acumen and/or sanity of coach Chip Kelly. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll believes they shouldn’t worry. Instead, Carroll thinks they should be the opposite of worried.

“I think the people in Philadelphia should be very excited about the changes that are coming,” Carroll said at the league meetings in Arizona, via CSNPhilly.com. “Maybe they can’t see it — the vision is not clear to them. Chip knows what he’s doing. It’s going to be interesting to see.”

It’s definitely going to be interesting. It could be interesting, however, and disastrous. Carroll is far more optimistic.

“His record and his history has proven that he knows what he’s doing and that he has his act together,” Carroll said of Kelly. “I know he’s really excited to have the opportunity to be in the position to mold the team. I wouldn’t doubt for a second that he’s not on it. He knows what he wants and what he needs. He’s proven that.”

Well there you have it.

I think I'll give Kelly the benefit of the doubt over the reactions of Eagles fans. But until he has a legit NFL QB they'll only go so far.
