Former Buckeye basketball star opens barber shop

Just off High Street on campus, you will find 12 on Twelfth.

It’s a brand new barber shop that is the brainchild of Buckeye Basketball great Scoonie Penn.

That’s right, that Scoonie Penn who led the Buckeyes to the Final Four in 1999 now owns a barber shop.

Scoonie has always had a love affair with barber shops and he has always wanted to own one.

You can go there and get a great haircut but you can also debate sports or whatever hot topic.

“A barber shop is always a part of the community,” Penn said. “It’s a place where people come and they have debates about sports, about politics, about what is going on in the neighborhood."

the 1999 final 4 run led by Scoonie and Michael Redd was one of the best and most surprising bball season I have ever watched/enjoyed. Still remember them beating ole miss in one of those pre season tourneys (which I am pumped to see us start participating in again) and I knew that season was gonna be different

Unfortunately, I do not see that happening. As much as I like Jerry and everything that he has done for Ohio State basketball in the past I d not see any more room in the basketball operations area for him. Plus, I really have no idea what he is doing right now whereas Scoonie has remained fairly close to basketball after his graduation.

Jerry Francis was a longtime college assistant (including OSU), then led Pickerington Central to a state title in 2012 before retiring for health reasons. And he's got a local son who's a pretty good b-baller as well.

"I envision my role here just being a mentor to the guys," Penn said. "My job description is a lot of different things, but being that voice as a former player, a guy who's been through this and is close to the university ... I hope to be a tremendous asset to the guys on the team. I do love this. I love basketball and I love this university."

I think Scoonie adds not just playing here and having great success here, he brings a real personality and charisma and knowledge of successful teams."

Penn's limited in what he can do in a coaching role, and he can only recruit prospects when they're on campus for official and unofficial visits. He can't travel to high schools or AAU games (other than to watch his son Dominiq, a 2020 point guard at Dublin Coffman). His role in establishing a new era will have little to do with the on-court product.

He would prefer to mix it up with the players if he could. At 40, Penn could still hold his own on the floor.

I was at the game and was confused about the shirts at first. I couldn't figure out why an OSU player had the words "Door Knob" on the back of his shirt, it was almost like the XFL. The university could have done a lot better job explaining this to the fans at the game.
