PG Options - Premise: Mike, Greg, DQ go

As suggested in the Matta thread, perhaps this belongs on it's own.

Just for fun, I know we don't know who's staying/going yet, but what would the speculation be as to how Matta might solve the issue of the lack of depth at PG if Mike leaves.

Personally, I think we're in more trouble if MC Jr leaves than if just Greg goes, as I think we're ok at the 'bigs' positions, but MC Jr brings a difficult to replace skill set, to say the least, and additonally, his departure would leave us quite thin at the PG position as practically the only 'true' PG we would have on the roster is Butler.

Naturally, I would speculate that Butler would start, but who splits time/spells him/helps out when he's in foul trouble?

Lighty, I think, has the defense to defend probably even the best point guards, but I'm not sure about his ball handling skills. I don't know that we were presented much of an opportunity to see if he has good/bad skills in that area. Does anybody know if he has any history of playing PG?

Turner? It's been speculated someplaces that he could fill in, but again, not sure that he has much history at the PG position. Admittedly, I know hardly anything about him, but I think most people would probably say they have even less familiarity with him.

Titus/Peters? I know they're walk-ons, but they do have familiarity with the system and if they're just spelling/filling in for foul trouble, they could be ok for short spurts.

Recruit? I would think most decent quality PGs that could come in 07 are probably committed to other schools by now, without question. Can guys still come in/switch their destination at this point, not that I even think that Thad would engage in this practice. Besides, Thad might be saving that spot for somebody else in 08 or 09? Anybody think there is ANY chance that Delvon Roe is still waiting out the situation to see what they do?

Anyway, just an interesting topic to think about. I personally hope that by this Saturday we're just thinking about being undefeated next year rather than stop gap planning of this sort.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't just looking at it from recruiting. As the poster above said, we get Noopy in 08, who would, again I believe be our only true PG on the team.

Butler would doubtlessly start, but my point was who do we have for depth? What if Butler gets in foul trouble early in a game? What if he gets hurt? What if he wants to catch his breath? Is it Lighty? Is it Turner?

It was just a speculation question on how this might be handled, strategically and 'in game'.

I do believe that Butler will play most of the game next year...Maybe 35+ minutes...I would go with Turner as the backup, or you could go with Diebler...

I think we will see Butler really step up if Conley leaves as he will have to take over and put points on the board form the PG spot, and this season will have helped him in terms of scoring off the ball and now he will be able to score with the ball in his hands or off the ball...

If Conley goes, you will see Jamar play the majority of point. Regardless, I don't see Jamar change much from this year to next. He is a pretty good ball handler, but you're never going to see him make the incredible assists you saw Mike make this year. Along with that, Jamar has never proven to have the explosiveness off the dribble that Conley showed towards the end of the season. I believe the best Jamar can do for us will be to become a God behind the 3-point line.

None of the recruits we have coming in are natural PGs and I don't think you're going to see them becoming them. The key to our team will be slashers, who can shoot and pass, and big men. We are bringing in some incredible size and will have the ability to basically manhandle the opposition in the interior, as long as our guards can get them the ball. Oh, and also we're going to have some shooters too. The key will be who will give us some assists?

Obviously you have Butler there, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Diebler run the point for a few minutes a game. He has good ball handling skills and can find the open man when he needs to (he has faced double and triple teams his whole career.) He can create his own shot, or shoot off of a high pick and roll.

Some b10 coaches felt he was the b10 POY in 05, not Dials. While that may be a tall order, Butler is definitely better with the ball in his hands. We cannot replace Conley if he departs, but we'll see an improvement in one starter. Butler is more confident and shoots better off the bounce.

Turner did an excellent job defending superstar recruit Derrick Rose... he should be a pretty good 2nd PG on the defensive end. IIRC, he was a former PG who hit a huge growth spurt.

I am hearing (scout board)

IndianaBuck: I am hearing that OSU may have another Freshman PG in the wings if Conley announces... Without naming names... I am hearing his last name is very well known around OSU Past.

Indiana has some IN sources re: Oden/Conley, but I'm not sure about his connections with the staff.

Assuming Crater would not be scared off, I think Jai Lucas would be a nice replacement for Conley. Florida & Kentucky are hot on his heels.

If Matta pulled in Lucas that would be amazing, but after not recruiting for the whole recruiting period, I would find it very hard to believe...

Also another thing to think of it we would go the Juco route that would not effect schollies in 09 as the juco PG would be gone by then...That might not be a bad idea just to have a backup to Butler...

From a brief overview it would appear that Jai Lucas is without a doubt the best player out there, and quite a good one at that. If we could get him if MC Jr leaves that would be an out and out coup for Matta. Seems like a high quality kid.

Not to speak for the coaching staff, but I think that would probably be one of their chief concerns. Wouldn't want to mess up a chance to get Noopy, as from the film I've seen and the reports I've read he sounds pretty amazing.
