PG Mike Conley (1st Team All BIG, NBA All-Star, Oscar Winner, Minnesota Timberwolves)

Clippers' Chris Paul, Grizzlies' Mike Conley are both on point
The two floor leaders have raised their level of play in an NBA Western Conference playoff series that moves to Memphis for Game 3. Clippers lead, 2-0.
By Broderick Turner, Los Angeles Times
April 25, 2013

They are the two shortest players on the court, yet 6-foot Chris Paul and 6-1 Mike Conley have perhaps the biggest impact there.

They are the point guards who direct and make the all-important decisions for their teams, Paul operating for the Clippers and Conley running the show for the Memphis Grizzlies.

And in the first two NBA Western Conference playoff games between the teams, the Paul-Conley matchup has been intriguing to watch.

Paul's steely play has helped the Clippers open a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Conley's performance in Game 2 probably has given the Grizzlies hope in a series that shifts to Memphis for Game 3 on Thursday night.

"Obviously, Mike is playing against the best point guard in the game right now in Chris," the Clippers' Chauncey Billups said. "But he's not backing down and, of course, neither is Chris. So they both will be going after it."

Chris Paul sees Grizzlies' Mike Conley approaching status as elite point guard in NBA
Article by: TERESA M. WALKER , Associated Press
Updated: April 28, 2013

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Los Angeles Clippers are focusing much more of their attention on Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley, and he has only himself to blame.

Conley is having a bit of a coming out party in this first-round series, scoring a postseason-best 28 points in Game 2, a performance he followed by handing out 10 assists with three steals and no turnovers, which hadn't been done in the NBA playoffs since John Stockton in 2001.

He topped that in Game 4, setting a Grizzlies' postseason record Saturday with 13 assists, 15 points and two turnovers.

Clippers guard Chris Paul says Conley is approaching elite point guard status in the NBA.

"The team goes as he goes," Paul said. "I think that's what their team realizes. When he plays well, they play well. They feed off his energy. I try to contain him as much as possible, but Mike is one of those guys year in and year out just keeps getting better, and he's a handful."

Paul said that before Conley handed out 23 assists over two games as the Grizzlies evened up this series at 2-all with Game 5 on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

With his play the past two games, Conley became just the eighth player since the 1992 postseason to hand out at least 23 assists with no more than two turnovers over a two-game span in the same playoffs.

Mike Conley outshines Kevin Durant as Grizzlies take Game 2 from the Thunder
Brett Pollakoff
May 8, 2013

There were multiple areas that the Grizzlies needed to focus on in terms of adjustments heading into Game 2 against the Thunder. The one they needed the most was made, in the form of point guard Mike Conley returning to, and then exceeding the stellar form he displayed for much of the second half of the season.

Conley put in a dominant all-around performance, and finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists in leading the Grizzlies to a 99-93 victory to steal the home court advantage in this series.

Game 3 is in Memphis on Saturday.

One of the keys for the Grizzlies in their surge into the playoffs and then through their first round takedown of the Clippers has been the play of Conley, who elevated his averages in every major statistical category once the postseason began. He was largely absent in Game 1, and in addition to his 13 point, three assist, two turnover performance on 5-of-15 shooting in that one doing his team no favors, the floor presence he normally brings in leading his team?s offense simply wasn?t there.

Things changed dramatically for Conley in Game 2, as he attacked with dribble penetration to force the action. Instead of taking what the Thunder were willing to give, he took what his team needed from them in order to distribute the ball and get a balanced scoring attack from his teammates.

Conley?s game was so special that we haven?t even mentioned Kevin Durant yet, who controlled the game offensively for his team and did everything he could to drag them to victory. Durant finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists, and was essentially unstoppable for long stretches of this game.

Rob Oller commentary: Conley grows into NBA star for rising Memphis
By Rob Oller
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday May 9, 2013

Few things happen quickly in humidified Memphis. From sleepy blues and slow-cook barbecue to the sauntering Mississippi River, the city moves at the speed of an Elvis love song.

FedEx packages would ship even faster if company headquarters were located anywhere but Memphis.

Into this community of lazy southern comfort stepped Mike Conley Jr., a fast-twitch Formula One car with no brake pedal. When the Memphis Grizzlies drafted Conley No. 4 overall in the 2007 NBA draft, they were getting a point guard whose college career ran counter to the take-your-time personality of the place.

At Ohio State, things happened fast for Conley, who started as a freshman and finished as one, too; his breakout play in the NCAA Tournament impressed NBA scouts enough for Conley to become a lottery pick. And so it was Goodbye, Columbus, almost before he said hello.

Mike Conley Jr. has come through when needed for the Grizzlies.

When the Grizzlies traded Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors on January 30, they traded away their No. 1 option in late-game situations.

Enter Mike Conley Jr.

Conley, who had arguably the best game of his career in Memphis? Game 2 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder in which he finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, has capably filled Memphis? clutch-time void.

Most Pts Per Isolation
2012-13 Regular Season
Mike Conley 1.05
LeBron James 1.03
Kyrie Irving 1.03
Tony Parker 1.02
**** Minimum 100 plays

It was Conley with a team-high six points (and five rebounds) when the game was within five points in the final five minutes of the Grizzlies? win Tuesday.

Because it's been gradual, Conley?s emergence as a go-to guy doesn?t immediately jump out. But his splits over the course of the season demonstrate his progress.

Conley led the Grizzlies in scoring (16.4), assists (6.4), 3-pointers (52) and free throw makes (128) and attempts (154) since the Rudy Gay trade. He averaged 13 points and 5.8 assists prior to the deal.

And in situations within five points in the final five minutes, Conley led the team in scoring (49) since Gay was dealt.

Those 49 points ranked 11th-most in the league since Jan. 31, just behind Dirk Nowitzki and ahead of Russell Westbrook ?- probably not company one might have expected Conley among just a season or two ago.

Memphis believes in Mike Conley
Grizzlies point guard goes a long way with a little faith early in his career

Mike Conley has emerged as perhaps the driving force of the Memphis Grizzlies this postseason.

The most common narrative is that the Memphis Grizzlies closed their eyes and said a prayer when they gave Mike Conley a five-year, $45 million contract extension in the fall of 2010.

But the real leap, the one that mattered, came long before they ever had reason to have faith.

Lionel Hollins knew little about Conley when he took over as head coach of the woeful Grizzlies in January of 2009. He had a long history with the franchise, having twice served as an assistant and interim coach. But he spent the beginning of the 2008-09 season in Milwaukee, as a Bucks assistant.

One thing was clear, though: The players who had been given a chance to play that season had gotten the last guy fired, so the other guys couldn't be much worse.

"To me it was pretty simple," Hollins said. "They'd drafted Mike fourth overall the year before, but he'd gotten hurt as a rookie. They also had Kyle Lowry as the starting point guard and they'd been talking about trading Mike.

"I came in and was like, 'Why are we talking about trading him? We're not going anywhere. Why don't we put this guy out there and see if he can play before you go trade him?'"
