PG Desi "DJ" Carton (transfer to Marquette)

now that carton has decided on his destination, i feel less guilty about wondering if...

walker : carton : : washington : muhammad

carton's decision to depart can still be about mental health, but i can't help but imagine how much carton not solidifying a starting spot by conference play affected his health. and then when you consider that walker was looking like the starter for next year, too, well...

would be interesting to know the transfer rate of teammates playing the same position who begin playing at the same time. washington and muhammad play the same position and were in the same class. walker and washington are in different classes, but they're both point guards whose availability coincided.
Remember when coaches were able to use competition to push players to improve their game. Yeah...not happening anymore.

i'm not going to begrudge players for leaving for what they think may be greener pastures. you know who else does that and has done that for decades? coaches, including those coaches who once used competition to push players.

but again again again... we don't know the full story about carton. not one of us has walked in his shoes. we don't know what is going on in his mind or what he has experienced.

you know how i choose to judge carton? i choose to judge him based on being what seems like a nice, smart young man who didn't cause off-the-court problems and didn't tear down osu on his way out the door. he was nothing but gracious. if i'm judging his character, then his decision to transfer ranks waaaaaaaaay down my list.

Not surprised he didn't transfer closer to home.......

Never bought the mental health issue as the driving factor with the transfer......

Columbus is 500 miles away, Milwaukee is only 200 miles away. Seems closer to home to me.

Most people "don't buy mental health" as an issue, but that's a societal problem that won't be solved here.

I am not discounting the mental issues aspect of the story, only indicating I never believed it was the driving force behind his decision to leave Ohio State......

No matter how many try to sugar coat it, having 3 players transfer in one season is problematical for the program moving forward......

There is more to the story and that much is obvious.....

I wish him nothing but the best going forward.........

DJ is the only transfer that hurts the program in any real way, and that is moreso for 2021-22 and 2022-23. He was supposed to be the future starter at PG eventually. However, he could also turn pro without playing 4 years in college, so it is hard to really gauge how much of an impact it has.

Luther may well have been headed back to coming off the bench, and Gaffney was a deep reserve. Plus, neither was really a team leader or go-to guy. Their transfers aren't nearly as significant as DJ. You would be wise to stop lumping the three together like they are all equally alarming and damaging, and some kind of indictment of the program. This isn't 1990, kids have great freedom to transfer and they use it quite regularly, and that isn't a bad thing. You also would be wise to wait until Holtmann has a poor season before criticizing him for having transfers, because the end product is all that really matters.

Big loss for tOSU basketball future. He showed real flashes of brilliance for such a young guy. Wish him well, wherever his path takes him. As someone above said, he did it with class. Holtmann did as well. That speaks well of both of these people. As someone once said, there's only one ball amongst the five players on the court. Hopefully we can get some of these kids to stick, hate to see such a patchwork of players in scarlet and gray. But with the atmosphere with the transfer portal, what ya gonna do? Some of the basketball players leaving (both men and women), baffle me somewhat. Maybe there's more info closer to the Schott than there is out here in Cali? Whatever or whomever they put out there in scarlet & gray - Go Bucks!
