No sooner do we get a thread going on a freshman, and the hype train begins.

Wow. Not too many HS careers begin like this. Playing on a loaded team with multiple DI players, a freshman pours in 50 points to win a close battle between Cleveland powerhouses. Gaffney scores 11, but the youngster is the talk of the night.

Wow! Are you a CLE guy Habanero?

You're right - two mega powers up here. Garfield Hts. coached by Ohio legend Sonny Johnson, and as the article says Meechie is his nephew. 50 points....school record is 52 by Sonny, he better be worried!

This is the most hyped freshman in the CLE/Akron area since you know who....LBJ. And the biggest CLE player since....wowza, Clark Kellogg? We really haven't had many super hyped freshman that I can remember. Some were hyped but nothing like Meechie is, there was David Lighty but expectations were not close.

No, I'm a Miami Valley guy, but I follow sports all over the state out of interest.

This kid is definitely the biggest from Cleveland since Kellogg, and he's going to get comparisons to Kyrie and Curry with his handles, outside shot, and smarts at such a young age.

The crazy thing about it is that this was a tight, well-played battle, so it wasn't some inflated 50 just for the sake of it. They leaned on a freshman all game long to secure a six-point victory.

I guess the next Johnson is going to get big-time hype next year, also. Sonny Johnson Jr. is apparently on his way to becoming a nationally recognized player, also. An 8th grader this year, but they are expecting similar things from him as Meechie is producing. I usually don't like hyping young kids like this, but we can all see the buzz coming.

That's going to be one heckuva tandem - and to think they'll be together for 3 years. Garfield Heights is set for a long run.

I am sort of. Born and raised there. When I was growing up, Garfield Heights was a very ethnic neighborhood. I guess things have changed up there. My great grandparents lived there and they were of Czechoslovakian heritage :boogie:

I still follow Cleveland high school sports pretty closely… Especially basketball. Garfield Heights and Benedictine will fight it out for supremacy of the Northeast Ohio King. I also think that whoever survives from those two will win the State championship but that is for a different forum..

Ohio State men’s basketball | 2021 prospect Meechie Johnson makes unofficial visit

When Ohio State offered his son before he had played a single high school game, Demetrius Johnson started to hear the gossip. As a freshman on the same Garfield Heights team as Alonzo Gaffney, Ohio’s top prospect for the class of 2019, it was assumed that the offer was extended to curry favor with the five-star recruit.

Now, with a freshman season under his belt, more scholarship offers to his name and an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Monday under his belt, Meechie Johnson is proving his merit. Listed at 5 feet 11 and 160 pounds, the point guard prospect for the class of 2021 holds offers from Georgetown, UNLV and a host of others including, most recently, Florida.

...

A college decision isn’t on the immediate horizon for Meechie Johnson, who is getting ready for the July live evaluation period, but the family is looking for a school with a good family atmosphere that can also prepare him for life if basketball doesn’t work out. Gaffney is committed to Ohio State but will play at a prep school during his senior season, but Sonny Johnson Jr., who will be a freshman this season, is also receiving early recruiting interest from the Buckeyes.

It has had Garfield Heights coach Sonny Johnson talking about a pipeline of top players going from his program to Ohio State. Demetrius Johnson, his brother, said that’s not something he’s opposed to but cautioned about making the best individual decision.

“An Ohio State pipeline would be unbelievable but at the end of the day I always say it’s about him feeling comfortable and him having a lot of say-so,” he said. “Ohio State was my dream school growing up, but just because I feel like that, he has to have a feel for whatever school he decides to go to. We’re excited. We’re so excited about Ohio State. There’s nothing like it as an Ohio kid. Everyone dreams about it as a school, but I also want him to get to know and get a feel for what you want to do and where you want to go. It’s still early. You’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

Buckeyes, Holtmann staying with Meechie Johnson after injury
This was going to be the spring where Garfield Heights, Ohio, 2021 guard Demetrius “Meechie” Johnson was going to make his mark on the national basketball scene.

The 6-foot Johnson is a national top 100 prospect in the 2021 class and already has two full seasons of varsity basketball playing for his uncle and coach, Sonny Johnson, at Garfield Heights to his credit. He agreed to move from an independent travel team to play for All-Ohio Red’s 16-U in the Nike E-16 competitions.

But prior to his team’s Division I district semifinal game against Euclid on March 7, Johnson felt his right knee lock up. He was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and also had damage to his meniscus. He underwent surgery, which ruled him out of the travel ball season this spring and summer.

...

Q: Do you have a timetable for when you expect to be back on the court?

Johnson: “I’m not rushing it at all. I just want to be able to come back and be ready by the next AAU season (in 2020) and be able to play against these top EYBL guys. There is really no timetable on when I should be back.

“I might be able to come back by the end of the year. They could clear me in December (for high school), but, really, I’m just focused on not getting hurt again. I could be able to play, but I am not rushing it.

“I would have another high school season (in 2020-21). This would be my last AAU season. That’s really what I am worried about.”

...

Q: You were at Ohio State for some games. What have they said since the injury?

Johnson: “They have been on me just as much as if I was healthy. They call me all the time and tell me, ‘Listen, there is nothing you should be worried about. You are young.’ People have bounced back from these knee injuries and come back stronger than ever.

“It’s just a lot of rehabbing and doing it the right way. That’s really what they tell me. They tell me to stay positive and keep a good mind-set.”

...

Q: Ohio State has four spots to fill in the 2021 class. If that ends up being a serious option for you, do you see that class being the future of that program?

Johnson: “If it’s the right fit, I would go. I want to go wherever a coach will let me play my game and be a point guard and let me run the team. If it’s a good fit at Ohio State, I definitely would consider it. Coach Holtmann and (assistant Ryan) Pedon, those are good guys. They are definitely in my top five.”
