watched most of both of his "aau" games today. very impressive, especially for someone who hasn't played organized or aau ball in a very long time. not that i saw many turnovers, but if he can keep those down, he'll no doubt get major minutes as a freshman. solid shooter. quick, creative slasher and finisher. head's up, always looking for others. a hounding defender. hustles. quick hands. certainly taller than i last remember. solid height for a point.
would like to see meechie work on shifting tempos (a la conley) and the mid-range game. can be 100% too much of the time. develop the 5-15' weaponry.
Meechie Johnson returned from injury on Saturday, playing his first actual game in more than a year. Johnson has gotten noticeably bigger, beginning to fill out a 6-foot-3 frame. Operating as a combo guard, Johnson was getting the best of both worlds done. Making flashy passes, finding cutting bigs and pushed the ball and stretched the defense whenever it was possible. Also, showed off his shooting touch that he’s always had, whether it was off the bounce or the catch, he can let it fly from NBA range. Crafty finisher that was able to finish around bigs acrobatically. He was able to draw a lot of attention off the drive, setting up teammates for easy lay ins or lobs. Creative ball handler that was able to get in the lane multiple ways, he’s always had a nice handle to his game. I came away most impressed with how much his on-ball defense has improved. He looked as if he took pride on that end and was really engaged, giving up little space. Most recruiting outlets have Johnson outside of the top 50 in his class, I honestly believe he’s a top 40 player in the 2021 class. It’s hard to do, but Johnson at times looked like an improved player in his first game back, often the best player on the court.

Much like the rest of the sports world, the future is uncertain for Johnson and his AAU teammates. With that in mind, he made a phone call as he was headed home following Saturday’s games.
He called (Indy Heat coach) Delaney.
"I realize that this game can be taken from you in a minute with injury," he said. "I’m grateful for every second opportunity I’m given. Things can change any day. They can cancel things for July and next thing you know that could’ve been our first and last game we played as a team. I had to thank them for the opportunity and let them know I really appreciate them and the opportunity they gave me to be a part of their team."
It left an impression on Delaney, who described Johnson as a natural leader while comparing him to a player he coached in high school: CJ Walker, who will be a fifth-year senior for the Buckeyes this season. Johnson also texted two Heat assistant coaches and asked Delaney where he could improve his game.
"I thought that spoke volumes for him and his character," Delany said of the phone call. "Most guys aren’t going to do that. I talked to a couple of the Ohio State coaches on the way home as well and told them, ‘I love Meechie Johnson. I think he’s got a bright, bright future.’ "
meechie and indy heat (edit: or maybe obc?) played two more games today. not sure the level of competition (last week was bad), but here is meechie's stat line for both games:
11 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists
18 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists
one assist away from two triple-doubles?
