PG Aaron Craft (B1G 6th MOY '11, Def POY '12, Acad AA, Dolomiti En. TR - Italy)

FYI, Bob Gibbons lists him as a combo guard (he also lists Smith, #93, as a combo guard). Note that Gibbons lists some players as PG, and Aaron (#96) isn't one of them:
Bob Gibbons All Star Report

I was under the impression he was coming in as a pure PG, and would probably be running the offense as early as next year. Was the PG on his AAU team with Sullinger...

So what position was Juwan Staten playing?

Craft is solid defensively, has some skill about him and is a heady player, but he shouldn't be asked to handle the ball against pressure D or do a lot of creating for teammates. Staten is more the type of guard who does those last couple things I mentioned. It'll be a tough call for Matta who to give the most minutes to at PG next year (assuming ET leaves). It seems to me that Aaron would be more well-suited to playing in a motion offense than what OSU likes to run a lot of the time, because he's just not that type of guy who's able to do a lot off the dribble.

i watched all-ohio red a number of times. for example, in the championship game at the spiece in indiana, red's lead over the illinois warriors dwindled to a possession in the final two minutes of the game. because there was no shot clock, red chose to dribble the ball out. as was the case most of the game and most of the tournament, craft was entrusted with the ball. staten played off the point at the two-guard position. with sibert injured, both kevin gray and staten played the off-guard position, with gray filling the role as a spot-up shooter and staten more of a penetrator. to be sure, staten was not the guy who was chosen to take care of the ball. such was the case over the course of the tournament and the others before it. against the warriors, craft secured the ball against stifling defense and never turned it over. absolutely no one who saw all-ohio red would claim that staten was the point guard.

there should be no doubt what position craft plays. he is a pure point guard. he doesn't possess the athleticism of conley, the natural outside shot of butler, or the driving ability of turner. however, he is a smart player with a confident handle. he makes few mistakes with the ball in his hands. furthermore, craft is one of the best on-the-ball defenders in his class.

Sounds like Chris Kramer from Purdue.

From everything I have seen/heard, Staten was the 6th man on All-Ohio Red until Sibert broke his leg and missed most of the summer. Craft is a PG, no doubt, and, as OSU_Buckguy said, he rarely makes mistakes. Albeit against lesser competition, Craft completely dominates games in high school, even against teams who are double and triple teaming him. He always seems to find the open man with the ball, or come up with a big offensive rebound or score when his team needs it.

IMO, he's the diamond in the rough of this class, and could turn out to have the 3rd highest impact (behind Sully and Thomas). I'm definitely not going to downplay his abilities because he's shown time and time again he may not look the part, but he sure shows it on the court.

agreed. craft repeatedly proved naysayers wrong during his aau seasons. unfortunately, many made conclusions about aaron based on his appearance without having seen him play. many thought that he couldn't flourish in an up-tempo game. each tournament, however, he showed that he adapts to different styles. he punished those teams that didn't think that he could push the ball or guard water bugs.

will craft greatly impact the '10 team? i think that depends on one thing: will turner do the improbable and return for the senior season? if he does, i think craft will be fortunate to get 8 minutes each game--albeit limited minutes that will nonetheless be meaningful. if turner does not, i think craft will battle smith for the bulk of the minutes at the point, with both playing substantial minutes regardless of who starts. over the long term, though, i think that craft will have a tremendous impact on the team. he will provide the program with consistency at the one position where you need it most. whether he starts as the floor general over shannon scott or smith in '11 is besides the point. craft will nonetheless provide the depth that is necessary for top-level teams.

I will admit that I did not see Craft in AAU ball...but seeing him in a high school game, I will respectfully disagree with what you guys are posting...

And I saw him in a game in which he scored 30, so it wasn't a bad game...

At the college level he is going to have to be able to shoot the rock...Right now I don't have confidence in him to do that...Team sagged off Conley, but he could easily get to the rack, even with guys sagging off of him..

I think that he can give us the bring the ball up the court, type stuff, but I don't see the ability to penetrate and dish, that we got out of our better Pgs here, conley, turner, etc...if Turner leaves, I don't see that...I see shooters, i see guys that can score inside, mid range, but who is going to put the ball on the floor and get open looks for Diebler, or who is going to take the ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock and get us a good look?

It is not that I am unhappy with Craft, I see him as a guy that will develop and be a solid player by his junior/senior year, just don't see him as a guy that can lead the show at the pg next year. Would love to be wrong tho.

no team wants a freshman point guard to lead a team unless the player is phenomenal. sure, no one would claim that craft is phenomenal. those players are very few and far between. i absolutely do not want to see craft as the starting point guard next year. if he is, that means that turner has departed.

however, if turner and buford leave after this season, there will still be players who can create their own offense. lighty is a potent penetrator and a (much) better spot-up shooter. both thomas and sullinger are immediate plug-and-play offensive threats. heck, both guys would be starting for most college teams right now. diebler will need those three players in order to continue to be a consistent deep threat. a 100% sibert is also a player who can create his shot. as i see it, only diebler and lauderdale will be next year's players who need a creator at the point.

again, i don't think anyone is claiming that having craft start at the point would be ideal. first, craft will be a freshman. second, craft is not a score-first player. however, he will still provide what we would love to have this year and sorely needed last season, which is a point guard who is a solid ballhandler and reliable on-the-ball defender. with shannon scott and combo-guard smith, craft will help form a solid backcourt trio for the '11, '12, and '13 seasons. as far as the '10 season goes, so much hinges on whether turner or buford returns.

Craft, L-B go to 20-0 at Calvert?s expense
Senecas trail by six at half, but top-ranked Eagles start third with 10-0 run
By Mike Genet, Associate Sports Editor, [email protected]
POSTED: February 25, 2010

Calvert played tough and played well in large stretches at home Wednesday. But against a team like Division III top-ranked Liberty-Benton, and against a player like Ohio State recruit Aaron Craft, it doesn't take long for a lot of hard work and results to get countered and negated.

Such was the case as the visiting Eagles capped their third 20-0 slate in four seasons with a 66-49 win over Calvert.

Liberty-Benton's lone regular-season loss with Craft in the lineup came in the first weekend of last season, eight days after the Eagles played for a state football championship, and Tallmadge needed a banked-in halfcourt shot at the buzzer to win by one at a tournament in Wooster.

How about just respecting people regardless of how many posts they have? That would be nice.

How about we are in a recruit's thread and that kid has signed to become a Buckeye.

I see plenty of great points here...and some awful discussion. Everyone slow down, respect some various opinions, and take the general basketball chatter about next year to that thread...or better yet, hold on to it so we can all focus on this year.

I'm splitting as fast as I can....

Craft, Lindsay earn top AP state honors

Liberty-Benton point guard Aaron Craft was named the Division III player of the year, and Ottawa Hills coach John Lindsay was named Division IV co-coach of the year by the Associated Press Tuesday.

Craft, who will play at Ohio State University next season, averaged 26.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists for the
No. 1-ranked Eagles. Liberty-Benton won the Blanchard Valley Conference title all four years with Craft at the point.

The 6-2 guard also is the first three-time BVC player of the year. Craft's Eagles posted a 20-0 regular season record this year, and they posted a 79-1 regular-season record in his four years.

I don't have premium access on BN but if he was good enough to be the primary PG for All Ohio Red I don't think he will have that hard of a problem adjusting to playing PG at the Big Ten level. I know that many people think I am crazy but so be with it.
