Former transfer Nikola Kecman has a much longer road to recovery after having another surgery on his ACL. The medical staff went into his knee to look at his torn meniscus, but found structural damage to the ACL he tore over in Europe. At this point it will be surprising if Kecman ever contributes for the Buckeyes.
Medical redshirts have to do with players getting another year of eligibility because of injury, not with freeing up scholarships. If Kecman is indeed unable to play any longer, his scholarship will no doubt become available for another recruit.LitlBuck;1738311; said:I was wondering if Kecman's playing career was unfortunately done at Ohio State if he could be given a "medical redshirt" and his basketball scholarship would become available to sign an additional player. I know this is done in football but I don't think I have ever heard of it being done in basketball at least at Ohio State.

That is correct. I do know what a "medical redshirt" is but could not think of a word or phrase as you did about moving into a non-athletic scholarship. That's why "This message is hidden because MaxBuck is on your ignore list. forward Nikola Kecman (knee surgery) probably won't be cleared until December or January.
I chatted briefly with junior forward Nikola Kecman before a recent game and he said he is hopeful of being cleared to get back on the court by mid- to late January. He had knee surgery in the spring.
Outside the lines
It's possible that Nikola Kecman, who is on schedule to graduate after winter quarter, won't play again for Ohio State despite having a year of eligibility remaining after this.
Coach Thad Matta said yesterday that Kecman still has pain in his right knee, on which he had surgery last summer to repair cartilage and ligament damage.
Kecman, who has played 81 minutes in 16 games since arriving in 2008, has had major surgery on his right knee twice and his left knee once since he was in high school in his native Serbia. Matta said he is hesitant to "risk hurting his ability to walk someday."
If Kecman does not return, it would free the one scholarship Matta needs to accommodate all of the five freshmen arriving in the 2011 recruiting class if both Sullinger and Buford return next season. For now, the Buckeyes are one over the 13-scholarship limit for 2011-12.

Nikola Kecman, right, played in 15 games last season, his only healthy stretch in his three years on the team.
Nikola Kecman knows there are worse things than basketball injuries.
You don't grow up in war-torn Serbia in the 1990s without developing a keen sense of perspective.
But still ...
While his Ohio State teammates enjoy their magical season, Kecman is stuck in a daily grind of rehab, not knowing whether he'll play again.
For the second time in three years, Kecman is out for the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during offseason workouts. In January 2009, the redshirt junior suffered the same injury to his left knee only three days after making his Buckeyes debut against Houston Baptist.
The injuries have left Kecman frustrated but not discouraged. He still holds out hope of returning next year and revels in being along for the ride during this undefeated season.
"I do feel I'm part of it," Kecman said. "I am. I am on this team and I travel with the team. I'm right with them on the bench every game. I just wish I could contribute in other ways - on the court."

Outside the lines
Nikola Kecman, one of four seniors (with Lighty, Diebler and Dallas Lauderdale) who received his diploma in an informal ceremony at Sunday's pregame shootaround, said before the game that he doubts he will return for his remaining year of eligibility next season.
Limited by knee injuries since he arrived in 2008, Kecman, an aviation major, said he will attend flight school this spring and expects to finish in August. If his knee issues are resolved by then, he might try to play professionally overseas. If not, he said he'll try to find a job in aviation management.
Kecman's departure would resolve the potential problem of Ohio State having more players than available scholarships (13) for next season if all underclassmen, including Buford and Sullinger, return.
OSU Career Over, Kecman Still Impactful
Nikola Kecman has never been able to show Ohio State fans what kind of player he is, but that has not stopped him from having an impact on this year's team. With his career for the Buckeyes in its final weeks, find out how the junior forward has been recognized for his efforts and what his future plans include.
