Jared Sullinger makes first public comments since back surgery
Posted by Baxter Holmes, Globe Staff February 13, 2013

Jared Sullinger came down funny after a rebound early against Sacramento on Jan. 30. The rookie forward?s back went out. The next morning, he was in excruciating pain and could barely walk.

Doctors didn?t give him an option; they told him he?d have back surgery and miss the rest of the season. And he was OK with that.

?It was a sign of relief, to get it over with, to get everybody out of my face about my back,? Sullinger said in his first public comments since surgery, Wednesday before the Celtics played the Bulls at TD Garden.

Sullinger's back had raised red flags during the draft, and these issues are partly why he fell to the Celtics late in the first round. But Sullinger said doctors told him his back should be ?good for the rest of my life.?

?Because with the back problems, I had limitations,? he said. ?The doctor told me with the two disks being herniated, it was only making my legs weaker. Hopefully, that?s a sign that I might be able to get off the ground more than 2 inches.?

I question any doctor that tells someone after back surgery they weill be god to go the rest of there life but glad to see Sully still has a sense of humor.

Could rookie Jared Sullinger be the next Kevin Garnett?
Though back surgery interrupted his promising debut, the Celtics have high hopes for ?the steal? of the 2012 draft.

IT WASN?T JARED SULLINGER?S HEIGHT that established him as an imposing presence on the basketball court. Not his arms. Not speed. No, it was something else: his rear end. As a top high school prospect in Ohio and then an elite college player for two years, Sullinger skillfully employed his backside to carve out space under the hoop. Space to yank rebounds. Space to score from the post. Space to frustrate opposing big men.

His posterior became such a force in the front court that it assumed an almost anthropomorphic quality, as if it possessed an identity distinct from Sullinger himself. It inspired a Twitter account, for instance. The tag line: ?Clearin room in the paint since 1992 with a greater gravitational pull than Jupiter.?

Between his freshman and sophomore years at Ohio State University, Sullinger, seeking greater mobility, dropped 20 pounds and cut his body-fat percentage. But not to worry, he reassured Buckeyes fans at the time. ?I didn?t lose my best friend.?

As Sullinger prepared for an NBA career, though, another part of his body was drawing notice, this time unfavorably. A troublesome back, which had sidelined him for a couple of games at Ohio State, gave pro teams pause. A leading prospect before the 2012 draft, his stock dropped after NBA doctors flagged him as a potential injury concern. Teams with the highest picks passed him over, wary of investing in a risk. As a result, one of the most promising arrivals to professional basketball was still available when the Boston Celtics? turn came, at pick No. 21.

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers thinks Jared Sullinger was worth the risk

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Rookie forward Jared Sullinger was worth the gamble, Boston coach Doc Rivers said.

The former Ohio State star was drafted by the Celtics with the No. 21 pick in the 2012 draft despite doctors figuring he'd need back surgery at some point.

That point was Feb. 1. But the Celtics have no regrets.

"We love the pick,'' Rivers said before Wednesday's game against the Cavaliers. "Where we were at -- No. 21 -- we just felt at that point there was nobody better in the draft than him. If he'd have come out the year before, he'd have probably been top five.

"It was an easy pick for us. Our doctors told us at some point he was going to need surgery. But it's not a career-ending surgery or anything like that. It's just surgery. We were hoping it would happen in the summer time, to be quite honest, that he could get through the year. But he just didn't. He'll be fine next year.''

For now, Sullinger is back in Boston.

"I am doing absolutely nothing right now,'' he said in a telephone interview.

Calm and collected
Sullinger accepts his fate, sees positives
Sunday, April 14, 2013
By:Mark Murphy

Jared Sullinger is like a glass of tap water that has been sitting for an hour.

There?s nary a ripple in the demeanor of the Celtics rookie ? a tremendous asset at a time like this, when beyond individual workouts and free throw shooting, all he can do is watch.

Sullinger?s first season ? off to such a promising start ? was curtailed when he was forced to undergo back surgery following a bad landing during a Jan. 30 game against Sacramento.

But he was braced for the crash.

Back trouble was the main cause of his slide in the draft ? a slide that made his availability to the Celtics possible. Sullinger knew there was a good chance he wouldn?t make it through his rookie season, even if disappointment was the ultimate result.

Unlike Austin Rivers, his former AAU opponent and the son of his coach, Doc Rivers, injury didn?t disrupt Sullinger?s calm. Austin Rivers, after a slow start, had just started to play well for the Hornets when he broke his (right) shooting hand last month.

Also unlike Rivers, Sullinger now has to contain his disappointment as his team begins a playoff run next week.

?I prepared myself for this, because I knew it would happen,? Sullinger said of his truncated season.

Jared Sullinger injury: Boston Celtics forward likens himself to 'The Lion King' character Simba, expected to be healthy come training camp

Very rarely, one must assume, does the same Disney children's movie inspire popular rap songs and motivate a Boston Celtics power forward during his quest to recover from a season-ending back injury.

But J. Cole has named two of his songs after 'The Lion King' character Simba, and Jared Sullinger told CSNNE's Jessica Camerato he has watched the same animated flick several times since undergoing lumbar disc surgery in February.

"I've watched 'The Lion King' four times (since surgery)," said Sullinger, who has been cleared for physical activities and is expected to be ready by training camp, according to Camerato. "Rafiki the monkey makes me laugh. It was a family movie when I was growing up. I like it because it teaches you you can always overcome. I'm like Simba."

The Simba comparison doesn't work perfectly here, since that would be relatng a man's back surgery to the death of a cartoon lion's uncle, and rehabilitation from the aforementioned surgery to Simba's return to his lion civilization in order to overthrow his dangerous and corrupt uncle, Scar. But if we can expand the metaphor to label Jordan Crawford as Timon and Brandon Bass as Pumbaa, and somehow convince Kevin Garnett to sing 'Hakuna Matata', I'm all for it.

Sullinger told Camerato he needed to wait nine weeks from the surgery before he could begin working out, and that he was "pretty much on bed rest" during that time. Now, he's back in the gym and has been working on planks and pelvic tilts to increase his core and back strength.

Sullinger approaching recovery with patience
May 14, 2013

For some 20-year-olds, more than two months off from work would seem like a dream vacation. For Jared Sullinger, the weeks away from his job as an NBA player dragged by slowly.

"I had way too much free time," he said. "It was just crazy."

The Celtics rookie underwent lumbar disc surgery on February 1, abruptly ending a promising first year in which Sullinger emerged as a threat on the glass. Instead of continuing his momentum from the month of January during which he averaged 7.0 points and 7.2 rebounds (including 2.5 offensive boards), the forward was sidelined from the game he has been playing since the age of four.

"I had to wait nine weeks after surgery to begin working out," Sullinger recounted. "I couldn't even tell you what I did. I was pretty much on bed rest. I could walk around at times, but I pretty much didn't do anything."

Sullinger, who turned 21 in early March, passed time by playing Madden and NBA 2K video games on his XBox and PlayStation 3 as well as the word game Ruzzle on his smartphone.

When he wanted to clear his mind, he watched one of his childhood favorite movies.

"I've watched 'The Lion King' four times (since surgery)," said Sullinger. "Rafiki the monkey makes me laugh. It was a family movie when I was growing up. I like it because it teaches you you can always overcome. I'm like Simba."

Celtics? Jared Sullinger learns lesson during recovery
By Baxter Holmes
Globe Staff
May 24, 2013

For months, all Jared Sullinger had was time.

He lay in bed on doctor?s orders, his 6-foot-9-inch, 260-pound frame largely immobile, playing video games, watching movies and basketball clips of himself as one day melted into the next, as he waited for his back to heal.

Then about two weeks ago, the Celtics forward, whose rookie season was cut short by lumbar disk surgery, was cleared to start working out again. He called his father, Satch, in Columbus, Ohio, who heard in his son?s voice both relief and enthusiasm.

Sullinger was excited, Satch said, just to be able to work up a sweat again.

The process of rehabbing isn?t to be rushed. Tedious steps must be taken delicately, as if to remind the body?s owner of its fragility.

?I?ve got 10 weeks to get back to where I was or even better.?

This was all new to Sullinger, who had never had such an operation. Trudging through the painfully slow process of rehab, he said, forced him to ?find himself.?

Sullinger is now upright, in the midst of, he said, a 10-week plan: Every two weeks, the intensity of his workouts increases by about 10 percent.

And by September or October, when training camp begins, he hopes to be close to 100 percent.

?I?ve got 10 weeks to get back to where I was or even better,? he said Thursday at a ?Stay in School? assembly at Northeastern University?s Matthews Arena, where the Celtics honored 1,500 middle school students from Boston public schools.

Jared Sullinger?s a class act
C?s forward frontand center for kids
Friday, May 24, 2013
Mark Murphy

There?s not much challenge in exciting an arena with more than 1,500 Boston middle school students who are already bobbing and writhing, with a few standing on their seats. But Jared Sullinger found something a little more creative than, and just as effective as, shouting ?fire? yesterday.

The smirking Celtics forward, microphone in hand as he relaxed in an armchair on stage at Northeastern University?s Matthews Arena, shouted, ?Rondo?s here!?

The ensuing squeals ? most obviously from the girls attending the Stay in School awards assembly ? hit boy-band level on the decibel meter. Rajon Rondo, naturally, wasn?t on the same block, and maybe not in the same time zone.

But the Celtics point guard has been on Sullinger?s mind and in his ear a lot lately. Sullinger?s recovery and rehabilitation from back surgery hasn?t been as lonely as it could have been, thanks in part to Rondo?s voice on the other end of his smartphone.

The two formed a curious surgical bond ? Sullinger with his back and Rondo with his left knee.

?At first it was (lonely), but seeing Rondo going through the same thing, but 10 times worse, I wasn?t so lonely because I have someone I can lean on who can support me through my injury,? Sullinger said after helping hand out awards. ?We talk off and on, just trying to get each other?s mind right. In a situation like this, if you go through it alone it?s kind of tough. When you have somebody by your side who is trying to get back to where they were really helps you out.?

Sullinger ready to work his way back
May, 23, 2013
By Chris Forsberg | ESPNBoston.com

BOSTON -- Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger resumed light workouts about two weeks ago and is ready to begin a 10-week rehab program aimed at ramping him back up, with the goal of being 100 percent around the start of training camp.

A lumbar-disc issue forced Sullinger to undergo season-ending surgery in February, confirming pre-draft fears about the health of his back. But Sullinger is adamant that the surgery will alleviate future concerns and believes he can be even better than he showed in 45 games this season.

"Everybody says back with a question mark; you might as well put an X through that," Sullinger said Thursday morning at a Stay in School assembly at Northeastern?s Matthews Arena, where the Celtics honored 1,500 middle school students from Boston public schools. "Because I had surgery and I?m taking my time getting back right, it won?t be a recurring injury."

Sullinger, the 21st pick in last year's draft, averaged 6 points and 5.9 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game. He had ascended to a starting role with Boston before the injury derailed his first NBA season. He said the surgery should allow his game to flourish moving forward and should be viewed only as a positive.

"Honestly, when I was playing, I was playing on one leg," said the 6-foot-9 Sullinger. "My right leg was pretty much dead. I couldn?t push off, didn?t have any strength behind it. With the right leg being the way it was, and still being able to produce the way I did, I guess it sets a bit of a foundation, but mentally I know I can play better."

Jared Sullinger Spent A Day Working At Taco Bell
By Dime Magazine

Today, all Doritos Locos Tacos at more than 160 participating restaurants in the New England area were only $1 with net proceeds going to One Fund Boston charity. Taco Bell Corporation also donated another $25K on top of that. Pretty cool. It was also awesome to see Jared Sullinger stopping by a local restaurant in Revere, MA to participate by serving up some tacos to the local residents.
