All-Ohio?s AAU program is rolling.
Not only is program director Jerry Watson loaded at the developmental and 16-and-under level with the likes of guards Trey Burke of Columbus Northland and Traevon Jackson of Westerville South, the All-Ohio Red 17-and-under squad is likely the best AAU outfit in the country with 6-9 Jared Sullinger and 6-10 Adreian Payne inside, 6-6 high-riser J.D. Weatherspoon on the wing and 5-11 Juwan Staten and 6-2 Aaron Craft in the backcourt.
All five of those seniors-to-be are elite basketball prospects who will soon make a name for themselves in a major college program. So is 6-4 off-guard Jordan Sibert, an Ohio State commitment from Cincinnati Princeton who is recovering from a fractured lower left leg but was on hand this weekend as All-Ohio Red romped to another title.
Serving as the host team, All-Ohio Red took down the Rising Stars Gold in Sunday?s 17-and-under finals of the All-Ohio Super 16 Showcase at The Hoop in Columbus, 66-59.
Sullinger, considered the top recruit in the 2010 class by some services and an Ohio State commit, was his usual reliable self with 16 points and his standard control of the backboards.
Staten got off to a good start with eight first-half points on several acrobatic drives and scored nine more in the second frame for 17 points. Craft, who is promised to Tennessee, had four points in the first half but 16 in the second en route to a game-high 20 points. He hit four three-pointers in the contest.
Weatherspoon hit an early three and later threw down a crowd-pleasing two-handed flush before finishing with seven points. Payne, who like Weatherspoon is considering a scholarship offer from Ohio State, did not score in the game. He made an unofficial visit to Kentucky on Saturday and played less than half the game.
OSU commitment Lenzelle Smith Jr., a 6-3 combo guard from Zion (Ill.) Zion-Benton, had 10 points for Rising Stars Gold. He was kept in check for much of the game by Craft, who is a very solid on-ball defender, but continued to show a steady hand in bringing the ball upcourt and distributing to teammates.
All-Ohio Red?s 16-and-under squad also won its tournament with a fairly convincing 60-46 win over All-Ohio Force. Jackson, the 6-2 son of former Buckeye superstar Jimmy Jackson, led the way with 16 points and doled out five assists. The 6-0 Burke, who has been playing terrific basketball of late, added 12 points.
We?ll have stories on Burke and Sibert and an update on Payne later this week.
