PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

I have realised after watching many of Kostas games why things this year were not as good as he (and we) expected.

what were your expectations? going back to what most of us said the kid lived up to it, he did a great job. he represented his state, university, family and many of us in a way that makes us proud.

whatever the outcome best of luck to kosta, i hope with all my heart he makes the best choice, whatever that maybe. i do feel that from what is in front of him the worst choice (whatever that maybe) has many positives and oppurtunities for the kid, the key is now whatever the decision is to capitalize on these...

Guys my point was this. Endorsement income from Greece, with all due respect, is chump change. We're talking a country in which people have only about 40% of the spending power of Americans and the population is half the greater New York City area. Chump change. Three million Euros is nothing to sneeze at, but forget any meaningful endorsement income.

Playing in Greece might help Kosta with his fundamentals, I don't know. I have watched the Greek pro teams play on TV here and I didn't really see the high standard of play that jed mentions. It certainly won't help him become a star in the US (name three top Greek stars).

I agree with BB73, but I think that Kosta could become a huge star if he had someone playing center and he could play the power forward role for which he was recruited. Mullins offers that possibility.

So, I think he should stay. He would lose the salary in Greece but it would be there the following year and he would have matured, come closer to a university degree, and be able to possibly make something happen in the NBA.

Maybe I am wrong. After all, as ScriptOhio pointed out, I have sometimes been a divisive radical.

I'd be extremely surprised if Kosta gets a 3 million Euro contract. That would make him one of the highest paid basketball players in Europe. Although he is a promising young player, he would probably play only around 10-15 minutes at a top level Euroleague club like Panathinaikos or Olympiacos. They should be crazy to pay him that kind of money, unless he agrees to a long-term contract with a high buy-out clause.

According to reports last Fall that is what he was offered to go over and play for a Greek professional team. Jed is just stating what has been reported previously.

I do believe that $3 mil once for more than one year. It was probably I think for three years.

Panathinaikos pays a million a year for Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Batiste, and will pay for Pekovic this summer, plus pay 1,5 for Jaskevicius. The owners are crazy two 5 ft twin brothers who will spend any amount you can imagine to get the player they want. (Remember Wilkins, Scott, Salley, Radja, coming over...)
As I said both Greek clubs offered 1 per year after the Final of U-18?s. If Kosta decides to come to Europe there are at least 3 clubs who would easily pay 1 mil euro per year even if he ends up playing 15 minutes (not to mention that there are not many decent big guys left in Europe these days).
Dont you think Mullens is as soft as Kostas is? Much more athletic but I dont think he will be able to push other centers, same problem Kostas has.

I agree with everything you have said but Mullens is 7'1" tall and weighs 265 pounds and has not gotten into a college strengthening program. He will be much more physical than Kostas when he is a freshman at Ohio State.

We all wish Kostas the very best in whatever decision he makes.

Actually no - Mullens is a different type of player entirely....

Lots of good thoughts in this thread...

Let me first start off by saying that BJ Mullens will be no where near as soft as KK...He will never fade away on a 3 foot jumper, he will take it right at the player and dunk it on them...

Also not sure on the guard comment about not starting on any of the teams that made the sweet 16...KK wasn't strong enough at times to get position for them to get the ball...It is a two way street, in terms of getting the passing lane for the guy to throw it, and also it is a two way street in terms of passing the ball out...But it is obvious that he didn't feel the defense at time and find the open man...

I will say that KK was out of position alot, which was due to us not really having a true 5...But he was not a good passer from the 4 spot either...No look for a high low type game, and not really as good at the pick n pop game as I thought he would be...

I know it comes off as being hard on KK, but just pointing out the things that KK needs to work on...It isn't fundamentals, it is just understanding his spot on the floor and getting better at it...

Also in terms of him playing man to man defense, I think he was a lot of the reason why we went to the zone...Along with our length on the wing, but there is no problem with guys like Butler, Turner, Lighty matching up man to man and Hunter would of been just fine at the 4 position, but don't think KK could of guarded the 5...

Truthfully I think the best thing for his career is to come back...Not because I am biased, but because he is going to struggle in the NBA next year and you always hope as a young player in the NBA they don't let that get to them and they continue to work...He is a top 10 pick if he comes back and improves on things and has a big year at the 4 position...That is what makes the most sense to me...

Greece doesn't make since to me, he will be going back to a type of play that he won't be playing in his career in the NBA...I think that college ball gets one more ready than players overseas...You always see guys coming over and struggling...

Dispatch

ESPN.com's draft insider has Ohio State freshman center Kosta Koufos ranked No. 21 of players potentially available for the NBA draft. If Koufos decides to go -- he is expected to make a decision next week -- ESPN has him projected as a "mid-to-late first round" pick. Under "similarities," the Web site names Darko Milicic.
Some mock drafts don't list Koufos at all; others have him ranked as high as No 8. Former North College Hill standout and Southern California freshman O.J. Mayo is a consensus top-five pick in early mocks.

He must be having a very difficult time making this decision or maybe he wants to wait a little longer before saying anything because with all due respect to him I doubt if he will be very popular around campus if he leaves us. It is sort of funny that his cousin Dino posted about a month ago saying he knew what Kosta was going to do but it's rather obvious that Kosta isn't sure what he is going to do or maybe he is.

However, I don't think we would be showing interest in a PF for 2008 if he was staying so MrsB you have your work cut out:)

Matta is a smart man.....recruiting another big is just plain smart....I expect KK to enter the draft but not sign with an agent, do the workout circuit and see where he lands.......depending on the feedback.....I could see him leaving and also staying.......scouts and agents are split on wether they think he will enter and stay in the draft.....FWIW.....
