Petty coach steals kid's moment in the sun

Had an umpire try to call my daughter out tonight on the second strike after she missed on a bunt attempt. His explanation was that "if a player tries to bunt and misses, they are out, regardless of the count". Not quite kiddo.

same umpire awarded first base to the other team's batter for being hit by a pitch that bounced to her, after denying my player the same thing the previous inning. Both made ample attempt to avoid the pitch.

And I am sick and tired of explaining the "dropped third strike" to people.

Yep, not a certified umpire.

But the larger question is what would have happened if kids had set the game up instead of adults? What would they have done about bouncing balls, dropped third strikes, bad calls and the infield fly rule?

I was lucky to grow up in a time and place when my friends and I had access to a park and all summer long was a continuous game of baseball. Most moms were at home and thus we were allowed -- actually encouraged (read 'forced')-- to get out of the house, on our bikes and off to the park.

From that experience I can tell you what would have happened if kids, not adults, were in charge of the game: Most liekely they would have had the two best athletes choose sides, the sides would have been flexible to maintain a balance between the teams, they would have figured out what to do with extra players, i.e. no riding the bench, what rules to obey and what rules to ignore, what to do when they had a disagreement, sometimes at the expense of the game, sometimes saving the game by making a compromise, some kids would go home and sulk and learn from the experience. Above all they'd figure out what they needed to do to keep a game going and how to settle issues through rules, compromise and a sense of fair play.

There is time and a place for all the adult play in jr. high school and beyond, but below that the point should be to give kids the time and space to play and figure things out on their own.
