I'd rather be napping!!
Polite, considering what I am about to post.

I live in a decent neighborhood on the SW side of Columbus, outside 270. Not a real upidity type of development, middle class yada yada....

There is a family that lives across the street (I live on a court) that... let just say that they weren't born in the US. They, the people are nice enough, I think at one point I might have even mentioned them questioning me about the directions on the back of a bag of quickcrete (there are directions there, I checked). Any way, like I said, nice people, pretty clueless about American culture, do's, don’ts and whatnot but nice people nonetheless. Although I did stand and laugh as they stapled Christmas lights to their siding one year

There is Mom, an RN, and Dad who is a professional type although I do not know what it is that he does, so we not talking uneducated people here, and there are 6 kids all of whom are pretty well behaved ranging from 15 to 7 or so.

Since we have Cols trash we all have one of those 90 gal trash cans to put out for our pick up. Well I know how much trash a family of 4 can create, and we recycle our asses off (it's still alot of trash). I can't even imagine what it would be like to have 8, but thankfully they will sell you a second trash bin. Unfortunately it would seem like the family in question either doesn't know this, or chooses not to.

A few years ago (maybe 2) it was discovered by their direct next door neighbor that they were taking what didn't fit and putting it in their back yard. They called the health dept, and had them clean it all up. As you can imagine ( I have no idea at all how long they had been storing trash back there) there was a nice rat population happily living off of the situation. They were now displaced. It basically took the rest of the summer before the rat bait stopped disappearing from under my deck and shed. The thought was fuck this is gross, but they will have learned and this shouldn't be something I will have to deal with in the future... So I thought. Goddammit, there is little that really makes me feel ill, this does. For the last 6 weeks or so we have been through two 4 pound buckets of the bait chunks, and it isn't like they are taking one or two every few days. I put out six or eight a night and they are all gone the next day. I stopped tonight and bought a 9 lb bucket (at a wonderful $50) and put out 8 more chunks). This is single feeding bait we are talking about! I am absolutely terrified that summer is coming to a close, if I can't kill them all before fall they are going to be looking for somewhere warm to go.

I am considering, since I am already over a benji down on the rat bait just buying another bin for them. Oh, if you are going to call the "they haven't acclimated to America" card, they have lived across the street from me for 9 years, that ought to be enough time.

How the hell do you approach this subject.... "hey, look, you are causing rats to congregate in the neighborhood and in America that is bad" Maybe this kind of shit was normal where they came from.

Sorry about the long rant, I am just so fucking frustrated...

You would think that the lesson would have been learned after the first time.

fuck!

I'd get them a second 90 gallon trash can as a present. And invite Thump to visit with his cages. He can borrow the big trash can for the drownings.

Take the time to let them know they can get another can. They may not be aware of it. Just because you live somewhere for a long time doesn't mean you are aware of the various opportunities available in the area. Politely let them know that you are having rat issues and ask if they might be experiencing the same. Approach it as though you are concerned for your neighbors and are simply trying to find out if it is only your yard that is having the problem.

Those questions alone should clarify the situation for you a little better. Then you can decide to purchase a can or not.

Perhaps you can make it a neighborhood project, each house chippiing in a bit, as a a friendly neighbor act. If you do this, when you give them the can, let them know that it was a neighborhood group project, not a single person project. That lets them feel like it isn't an accusation, its a helpful gesture from the block. You could include something about how as a single family of 4(? was that right?)you have a hard time keeping trash down to one can, you can't believe a family of 8 is doing "so well" with the same and that the second one should make life easier.

You will probably find, if you try these suggestions that they will give back in some manner, such as homebaked food or some such friendly neighbor gesture as well. You didn't say what nationality your neighbors are but I have personal experience that Hispanic and certain Asian and Island nationalities love neighbors and family and if you can make them feel as such they will treat you the same.

Good luck because rat infestations are not just a danger from nips and bites, its a health hazard as well.

Rats are much tougher than groundhogs!
You may well think about paying for a Professional to take care of the job. They should have some sort of guarantee for repeat visits. (needed)

It sounds like they are resistant to what your feeding them.
Your just making them fat and sassy! :tongue2:

It should be pointed out also that many people are clueless to situations because of work, family other interests.
Not just immigrant families.
Important to show respect at all times.
A nice fat dead rat might bring the point home, so to speak. Wear heavy gloves.

Agreed, but in the first post he specified they were immigrant, just not from where. I was not making assumptions.

They are Somolie, they are nice people but when the health dept comes to your house and tells you "you need to clean up your back yard" once.....

That should be enough.

Although they did pay a guy to nail a piece of plywood to the bottom of teir garage door and paint it..

I am just supremely upset, not to mentioned sickend, I find rats gross and disgusting. There might be pests I could live with while I fight, this isn't one.

I am at a loss.
