People to Punch, Pet Peeves, and General Vexations (mega-merge)

People who want to sound smart and then they say the wrong things. I'm no Mr. SmartGuy or anything, but when I hear people say something wrong, but they try to sound official, they sound double-dumb to me. I brought up people who say "Eastern Standard Time" or "Central Standard Time" when they're scheduling a meeting in August or July. Unless you're in a state that doesn't observe Daylight Saving, then you're doing it wrong. You aren't on any "Standard" time in July. Stop trying to sound smart.
Or, the other one that used to bother me.. When our family went to church every Sunday, this lady minister used to sprinkle "scientific facts" into the sermon to "prove" the existence of God. And I'm not going to use this as a religious platform - there's probably other, gooder threads for that. But her paraphrased words were that the earth is exactly in the right place in the solar system to support life. She's referring, of course, to the "Goldilocks Zone". And I'm not trying to open the door to debating that here, either. But she'd say that it's exactly, to the inch, in the right spot. One inch closer to the sun and we burn up. One inch farther and we freeze. And that's just wrong. In the earth's elliptical orbit, we are sometimes about 91 million miles from the sun, and sometimes 94.5 million miles from the sun. It isn't exact to the inch. The Goldilocks Zone is much bigger than 1 inch.

I need some clarity on the pizza/pie thing.

Are you talking about someone who always says pie instead of pizza, because if I’m ordering an entire pie, rather than a slice, I’ll say I want a pie when placing the order. But if want a slice I’ll clarify that when ordering.

But if I’m thinking about what to get, I’ll say “want to get pizza?”

If I’m ordering a slice I’m dropping in. Otherwise it’s the full Monte

It's pretty simple. If you're thinking of pizza, the word "pie" shouldn't come up.

Pie is for dessert.

Which opens up some more pet peeves:
1. Pie and pi are different. If you want to pretend to be "smart" or "nerdy" and celebrate pi day (March 14), then fine. And if you want to serve pie on pi day, then fine... I like pie. But it isn't really that cute. Pie and pi are different. Serve pie on pi day if you want, but they aren't related. It's just kinda dumb.
2. My wife doesn't like cake. She doesn't eat birthday cake. On her birthday she insists on pie. Birthday pie. Again, I like pie. I probably like it better than cake. So if you have a reason to make me some pie, then cool. But birthday pie is sacrilegious. You don't put your Christmas presents under the Christmas ladder. You don't give your kids strawberry easter bunnies. You don't put candles in a birthday burrito. Don't put candles in a birthday pie. There is no birthday pie.

..then there is hair pie which is completely different yet again.
