Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Some of these blokes are very optimistic.
We'll be favored in 3 of the 5 remaining games (bigger favorite over MSU/Rutgers, < TD favorite over Nebraska, maybe just under a TD underdog against Indiana, big dog against OSU). 6 wins is the most likely outcome to me, but it'll likely be really close.
They may be favorites against Sparty and Rutgers. Maybe over Nebraska, too.
They'll be 20+ underdogs to Indiana.

I saw that post on their board and my first thought was 'How the fuck does he figure Indiana will be less than a TD favorite over PSU". :slappy:

Feel free to move this. Maybe it should go in the Urban Meyer thread, or the coaches comings and goings, or... whatever.
So... it's long been discussed and believed on the Penn State boards that Urban Meyer was supposed to replace Paterno. It's just one of those things that they all believe. Joe Paterno hand-picked Urban Meyer to replace him when he retires. This idea seems really silly. Let's look at the timing:
- Urban Meyer coached at Florida up until 2010.
- In 2011, Meyer was an announcer for Fox, or FS1, or something. I forget.
- In 2012, Meyer was coaching at Ohio State. I believe he was hired before the bowl game in 2011, right around the time of the game against the cheaters.
- In 2011, the news with Sandusky and stuff exploded. It was during the season.
- Paterno mentioned no plans to retire until that scandal. At the time of that scandal, he announced his retirement at the end of the season. There was some line that the news repeated. Something like, "The Board should waste no more time on this decision - I'm retiring at the end of this season." I absolutely do not believe he was planning to retire before that news hit.

Going into that thread, the first dude says that he thinks everything was settled - Meyer would replace Paterno. He's off by a year, but that's not worth crying about. Of course, nothing is confirmed with anything other than, "yeah, that was the plan!" He's basically using the internet to prove that the internet is right.

This is very much like the story where a referee told a Penn State player that they're just lucky to be playing football, after the scandal. Depending on who's posting that, the team Penn State was playing changes, the unfair play in the game changes, and even the player to whom the referee was talking changes. But it's still a truth in their eyes.

Ha - but show them Joe Paterno running off the field, or an OSU fan getting punched in the head, and it's "photoshopped" by a "Pitt fan".

With stats as they are to date, on a neutral field:
  • Penn State vs Indiana: Indiana −27.1
  • Penn State vs Nebraska: Penn State −5.0
  • Penn State vs Rutgers: Penn State −12.6
  • Penn State vs Michigan State: Penn State −11.9

and all of that, I might add, is based on the Allar & Franklin body of work. Once the new QB stats start to get burnt into the models, the spreads will change, especially after this week when OSU compresses the margins worse than other teams can do.

Regarding the belief that Urban was set to replace JoePerv.

I recall reading an article back when Meyers was between his coaching stint at Florida and Columbus. It basically said that it was always expected that Urban would one day coach the Buckeyes.

According to the article I read, his office at Florida was filled with pictures of his prior days at Ohio State. It claimed he had virtually no photos of his then current job with the Gators.

Apparently, he was also seen several times wearing Ohio State clothing during his time with Florida.

So yeah, the idea that Urban would take a step anywhere near creepy valley other than to lead the Buckeyes into battle there is patently ridiculous.

I've tried to explain that timeline but they just can't grasp it. Fick was interim coach in 2011. By late September, early October the worst kept secret around Columbus and OSU was that they were negotiating with Urban. The Sandusky scandal didn't blow up until mid November of that season and by that time Urban to OSU was a done deal. ( unofficially ). Paterno was fired in mid November with only two games left in the season and Urban was officially announced as the New OSU Head Coach on November 28, the Monday following The Game. There was absolutely no way Meyer was going to PSU.
