That whole speech is what confirms Paterno being a monster to me. The cult can explain away all the bullshit they want, but these things can not be disputed:I know it's funny and all to keep making that reference but it makes me uncomfortable to think we are partaking, in any small way, in minimizing the impact this had to the actual victims.
Mike Mauti is going to have to live with the scars of this for the rest of his life and I don't think that is anything to laugh about.
1. Paterno was told Sandusky may or may not be messing around with children, sexually. He was told this well before this speech.
2. The best version, as far as Paterno or his supports are concerned, is that the police investigated this.....his superiors investigated this......and it was found to be false. We know that's not true, but let's pretend for a second that an actual policeman and not the Vice President of Finance who oversees campus police investigated the accusation thoroughly, and was found it to be lacking any substance.
3. Years later, actual evidence and actual reporting now has all but confirmed that, yes....Sandusky did do something to these kids way back then. The rumors that were thought to be false are actually true.
When faced with the new information, Paterno has the gall to question to the world if these kids were actually victims or not. Any person with a functioning brain will see point number 3 and realize, "Holy shit.....point number 1 actually happened and point number 2 must be faulty." And I'm sure Paterno thought that, too. But that's damaging to his brand, so instead we question the validity of these victims, or whatever you want to call them. I don't need a hand written letter from Paterno to whoever detailing how to cover things up at that point. He's already cemented monster status to me.
