Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Oh man. The tweets by former players, the way the current staff still hasn't been notified about the hire, how public all of this is, the dissatisfaction with the hire by fans and players... this is epic. This kind of thing kills a program. They are about to be blown back to the stone age. I'm torn between enjoying it and being concerned about the larger ramifications to the Big Ten... eh, fuck it, pass the popcorn.

As Gator and others have stated, the real shit hasn't hit yet. At some point in time it does begin to reflect on the Big 10 and on Ohio State. Reduce Penn State to a team more fit for the MAC and you seriously affect the Buckeye SOS and reduce the overall strength of the conference.

I think their fans and ex-players need to realize that this has made the job toxic and that the O'Brien hire is just the first of several pieces of tangible evidence as to just how toxic. Best advice? Look at this as a necessary step to clean out the office, douche the program and start all over again.

Hey, I could turn that into a catchy Broadway tune: Just pick yourself up, douche the place out, start all over again...

During his time as an offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, the team was 15-11. Following that, he was the offensive coordinator at Duke for two years while they posted a 1-22 record with a win over Virginia Military Institute. I know it?s Duke, but?1-22. He then landed in New England where he held various offensive assistant jobs until being named the offensive coordinator. For what it?s worth, he was on the staff when Charlie Weis left, but Belichek handed the reigns over to 29 year old Josh McDaniels. Then, when McDaniels left, the Patriots went 2 years with WITHOUT an offensive coordinator, rather than naming O?Brien to the job. They made the playoffs both of those seasons.
This is the Apollo 13 of moonshot coaching hires.

‎'Tis what happens when you live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere and do the same thing for 50 years...
I had a recruit's mother (who will remain nameless) tell me a few years back that she wouldn't send her minority son to PSU. Said campus was fine but off campus she was worried if they'd be served dinner...

They could have learned something from us. They were in a hurry to name a coach. They should have slapped the interim tag on Bradley for next season too and they would have had a lot more time to prepare, time for the dust to settle, and could have avoided a lot of this mess.

If this gentleman comes in and actually makes PSU a consistent winner again, it will be more entertaining to read the "Hurrrr! This guy just gets it! He's bought into the tradition" bullshit.

I hate Penn State already.

They are Child Rape U for the next 20 years.

Coach Meyer is going to rip through 3-4 Blackberry phones in the next month simply firing off all the texts to PSU commits.
He might burn through his texting phones - but I kind of doubt it will be in search of too many more Penn State commits. I mean, we have Spence already in the fold along with Schutt. The Penn State commit count is 14 and falling, with much of the quality already off the table or already contacted. Camren Williams has already been given the UFM push. After that what is there? Guess Reeves and Lewis being the only remaining worth putting a push on this late.

The thing I don't get is what is the "Penn State way" I keep hearing about? To hire someone with past experience in keeping terrible secrets in-house? Or maybe it is hire a coach who either was aware of the Sandusky stuff the entire time OR was so naive that seeing a 65 year old man with 10 year old boys was acceptable?

I understand the uproar about O'Brien being a crappy coach but everything that Penn State accomplished under JoePa is now tainted in my opinion. If JoePa covered Sandusky up (or handled it in his own way) what else did he cover up?

However, I can't believe they didn't hire a coach from a small school. The CUSA or MAC champion coach would have been ideal because at least he could hit the ground running and assemble some sort of recruiting class.

I've actually been thinking that Adazzio from Temple might not be a terrible hire for PSU. He knows the area, has had experience dealing with the issues that come at major programs (at Florida). Granted he only has a single year of head coaching experience...but that's still one year more than O'Brien.

Southern hospitality? Or did the 'for' before dinner get misplaced?

Regardless I should probably point out that my Sawney Beane comparisons were not in just.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with mediocre ice cream.
