Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Look at the offense. They have 8 senior starters. Add to that Redd who is a junior and whose listed backup is a senior. McGoin is a senior and Bolden and Jones are both vaguely rumored to be transfer candidates. Most significantly 7 of the 10 names listed in the two deep at OL are seniors. Ryan Nowicki (not on their depth chart but a well regarded Soph) who was expected to step into one of those roles has already said he is gone.

To be sure, OSU had some numbers issues coming into this season but we have moved people around to compensate. PSU will not have that luxury. If they any more of the OL studs from their 2011 class things get critical.

While staying at 85 in 2013 they will have plenty of ships, but I look for lots of those to go to walk-ons - and that's just lipstick.

It will be an interesting weekend.

I'm only seeing 5 seniors starting on offense and two of ten seniors on the OL per their latest depth chart. Remember that PSU, for whatever reason, usually lists the year they are in at school rather than their eligibility. The depth chart I linked will give you a better idea of the distribution across classes.

Nevertheless, your point remains that going forward there are going to be major holes that they simply will not be able to fill with B1G talent.

Depth chart I am looking at shows Kersey as a starter. If rumors of Jones being at Pitt this weekend are true Bolden could be huge - particularly if the Hackenburg commit does not hold.

The depth chart that O'Brien released a few weeks ago (linked in my preceding post) has him behind Allen Robinson in the depth chart.

For those keeping score, O'Brien has announced that all but 2 or 3 players have told him they are returning. Those 2 or 3 include:

Starting RB Redd visiting USC
Starting LB Fortt visiting TCU
2nd team TE Haplea visiting FSU
Frosh DT Pollard switching to Rutgers
Backup punter/kicker Fera visiting Texas
RS Frosh OL Nowicki has announced he will not be returning (no destination)

So far as we know all committed players for the class of 2013 own televisions.

Don't worry, Matt Mcgloin will be their savior.

Since Monday the first thing I do after waking up is check twitter to see if there are rumors of Penn Sate players transferring. If there are, my next immediate stop is BWI McAndrew. It's probably the most entertaining morning routine I've ever had. I can't wait for the transfers to start snowballing...my Christmas wish is to see McGloin's face when he has a third string offensives line and sees Simon lining up over his walk-on right tackle, who's shaking so hard in his cleats that he gets a false start.

Penn States recruiting ground is going to be carved up like a Thanksgiving Turkey. Urbs will strut into Pennsylvania and leave with every recruit worth a damn. The East Coast territory PSU used to own will probably start to lean heavily towards Maryland once Under Armour starts pumping money into the program. The kids who want to stay in state will obviously migrate towards Pitt, which between the PSU disaster and joining the ACC its very likely this is the best situation they've ever been in...for PSU though, this is the worst possible time to have Pitt going to a better, more stable conference. It will take at least a decade after the sanctions end, if ever, for Penn State to gain it all back. It all depends on how well Pitt can capitalize and how much success they can have in the ACC. Hell, by the end of all this I wouldnt be surprised if the ACC ended up being a two team struggle between them and Florida State.

What Could Have Been Reply
November 05 to 11, 2011
Jerry Sandusky is indicted on multiple accounts of child molestation. University VP and Athletic Director are indicted on counts of perjury before the grand jury.

University President Spanier gives a statement saying that the legal process must be observed and pending the outcome of that both Curley and Schultz will be on administrative leave.

Spanier and head football coach Joe Paterno meet with the full board of trustees to go over everything relevant to all the criminal indictments. Secure in the knowledge that this is not a Penn State scandal, not a Penn State football scandal and certainly not a Joe Paterno scandal, Coach Paterno is authorized to hold a press conference to quiet the growing media storm.

Addressing the national press corps. Coach Paterno lays out the FACTS of the situation and outlines how all steps were taken within the football program to address any allegations concerning Mr. Sandusky.

The Penn State Board of Trustees announce that they will conduct an open and transparent investigation into any areas where the Sandusky situation may have effected Penn State. These investigations will carry out through any and all criminal trials associated with the case.

November 12, 2011
Joe Paterno leads the Penn State Nittany Lions over the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 45-23 giving him win number 410.

December 03, 2011
After winning their final three games the Paterno led Nittany Lions defeat Michigan State in the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game earning a berth in the Rose Bowl.

December 05, 2011
Coach Paterno holds a press conference and announces that due to a diagnosis of lung cancer, the Rose Bowl will be his last as head coach of Penn State and that he has been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure his succession. Urban Meyer is announced as the first new head coach of Penn State in 46 years and promises to uphold Joe Paterno's legacy of Success With Honor

January 2, 2011
Penn State defeats a favored Oregon squad by the score of 45-17 in the Rose Bowl. Joe Paterno is carried off the field on the shoulders of his team one last time.

February 2012
Urban Meyer puts together the top rated recruiting class in the country heading into the 2013 season.

July 2012
Following the Sandusky trial, the ncaa announces that barring any surprise findings in the perjury trials of Schultz or Curley, there will be no sanctions against the Penn State football program and commends the university and Joe Paterno for being a model of ncaa compliance for over four decades.

September 01. 2012
Ranked #3 in the preseason polls, Penn State takes the field against Ohio U. at Beaver Stadium. At halftime, a frail but feisty Joe Paterno--who is reported to have undergone his chemotherapy with amazing resilience for a man his age--walks out to midfield without assistance to receive the thunderous ovation of one hundred eight thousand grateful Penn State students, alumni and fans. There is not a dry eye in the stadium as he walks off the field.
