Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I kind of have more of a problem with Penn State being in the Association of American Universities (AAU) and Nebraska being removed (probably because of Texas).

No academic fraud, at this point, with PSU, but Nebraska was just removed because of certain programs.

The reason why Nebraska was removed from the AAU is because the school isn't at the foremost of research. The school focuses heavily on Ag research, and the med school is in Omaha, not on campus.

Plus there was some politicking going on, but that was one of the ultimate reasons they kicked UNL out.

And Texas sucks.

Some of these people need mental help. Seriously.

The OP in this post is supposedly a PSU grad who goes off on the 'holier than thou' crowd who are still saying the football program and the HC were pure as the driven snow. Of course the lunatics start in:

Yeah, that's what the NCAA is thinking. They are penalizing Penn State for never breaking NCAA rules, winning a lot of games, and graduating over 80% of its football players. Yes, they are penalizing the most upstanding competitive program in college football. How could we miss that?
The NCAA should focus on programs that actually break its rules and leave criminal matters to the courts.

Hope all you 'Holier-than-thou' people are happy ...

...this is what decades of thumbing your noses at and ridiculing every little misstep of the rest of the college football world has gotten us.
People have been eagerly awaiting the day when they would get to tear us and the image we have portrayed down adn stomp on it. That day has come.

It's ridiculous to believe that many of us can't see that Joe is culpable on some level in this fiasco.

Others might and probably are more guilty than he is, but HE had the power to bring it into the open with one phone call.

You can argue that he naively put too much faith in the administration of the University or whatever, but the bottom line TO ME is that at some point, for reasons known only to him and now God, he washed his hands of the whole situation.

The "St. Joe" image evaporated the minute he decided or was convinced to stay silent. A lifetime of good deeds and service swept away by one incredibly bad lapse in judgment. Sad.

A sad day that now tarnishes more than 50 years of memories.

I'm not going to speculate on what these alleged sanctions might be, but I can't wait to her the whining about how they were "undeserved."

For those who still argue and believe the "football program" did no wrong, well, you go right ahead and keep believing that.

The rest of us rational people know better.

My Penn State degree hanging on my wall still means something to me. It's just every time I look at it now, it's also a reminder that, as the slaves used to whisper to the Roman generals returning from that conquests that "all glory is fleeting."

The NCAA would really be naive to accept whatever self-imposed punishment Penn State proposed and just stop investigating the school.

Not that NCAA does a good job investigating -- they don't -- but if I know there's a ton of incriminating things at my school, I'd self-impose and pray no one investigates.

Just note that Michigan and other B1G schools voted to have UNL removed as well.

Sigh...not sure if posted already or not....

The Paterno family released a statement today in response to Penn State?s decision to remove the statue of the former head coach from outside Beaver Stadium. Here is the full statement:

Tearing down the statue of Joe Paterno does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community.

We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth.

The Freeh report, though it has been accepted by the media as the definitive conclusion on the Sandusky scandal, is the equivalent of an indictment - a charging document written by a prosecutor -- and an incomplete and unofficial one at that.

To those who truly want to know the truth about Sandusky, it should matter that Joe Paterno has never had a hearing; that his legal counsel has never been able to interview key witnesses, all of whom are represented by lawyers and therefore unavailable; that there has never been an opportunity to review critical evidence which has not been made public; that selective evidence and the opinion of Mr. Freeh is treated as the equivalent of a fair trial.

Despite this obviously flawed and one-sided presentation, the university believes it must acquiesce and accept that Joe Paterno has been given a fair and complete hearing.

We think the better course would have been for the university to take a strong stand in support of due process so that the complete truth can be uncovered.

It is not the university's responsibility to defend or protect Joe Paterno.

But they at least should have acknowledged that important legal cases are still pending and that the record on Joe Paterno, the board and other key players is far from complete.

Moving fast (1-2 weeks after the Freeh Report) may make the NCAA look like it's making strong moves and Penn State is getting hammered.

Moving this quickly may just be a PR gesture by the NCAA and make it look strong. I hope I'm wrong and Penn State gets removed from the NCAA for 2-5 years.

Or it may be the reality that there are innocent players in the program who deserve to take their chances elsewhere. The timing of the Freeh report doesn't give the NCAA much wiggle room time wise with preseason beginning in two weeks.

If I were a Penn State alum/student/athlete I'd be upset if the action included other, un-indicted, programs. It's unfortunate that failure of the President/VP/AD/Police Chief to take action could also bring down the basketball program (Ok, I know, define 'down') track, volleyball, etc.

Frankly, there isn't going to be a revenue source for those programs to worry about once the breadwinner is gone.

this reminds me of all the alter boys getting raped by these men at all these churches...

old men who are looked up to by everyone(Paterno/Sandusky/Priests/Ministers)

little boys(alter boys-towel boys-at risk youth boys)

why do they rape them?...these men all think they are above the law...they can do anything they want because they "talk to god" or because they built some "great university"

if joe pa was alive today, he wouldn't help the investigation/he would lie and lie and lie......and lie some more

Good point, and it pertains to all these coaches getting busted. They would have kept covering it up unless the truth had come to light.

Damned skeletons.....

Given the timeline for PSU response to the four questions I don't see how you can label sanctions being announced now as anything less than "hurried". The most obvious reason for doing so is to allow players to transfer and schools to fill schedule holes.

None of the camps have started. I don't believe any school is in fall session as yet. These kids could easily move in the two weeks or so that are available.

IMO the quickest path to PSU returning to respect as an academic institution would be to jettison big time football completely. I had constructed a scenario where PSU had worked with the NCAA to come to just such a conclusion. The flaw is that I can't envision a decision making authority at PSU who is in a position or would be willing to make this decision. If the BOT were involved there would have been leaks and push back. It would be an incredibly ballsy move by Erickson.

Depends on when the questions were asked exactly, I'm thinking.

I have to disagree. You have to remember that some schools (like the University of Washington) work on a quarterly schedule....

If they do come down as harshly as expected, the scene of coaches flying in to offer players will be quite interesting.
