Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

What I find amusing is how all of these idiots keep claiming that the Freeh report was the end all be all. The report was nothing more than exposing the culture of cover up at Ped State. It was what the BOT asked for, which was to answer how did this happen? If Freeh were to have had his FBI credentials and really got to digging, I am sure the suicide rate in State College would have skyrocketed.

I don't think these people really want all of the truth to come out since it is most likely only going to get worse for them.

Re: More today from Sara Ganim (link)ReplyI don't mean to be insensitive because the sexual abuse of children is horrific, but the whole issue beyond Sandusky's behavior is the failure to report. When someone in 2012 claims to have been abused in the '70s and is, say, 45 years old today, what does it say about them going all these years not reporting it? Can't you fairly add them to the list of people who could have prevented later acts of abuse?

That's a great point. JoePa & his cronies had careers and a football program to protect? What's your excuse, little boy rape victim?

I know, right! I mean, how dare that little boy, who was allegedly raped, want to erase it from his memory and bury the pain deep inside (not to be confused with Sandusky's version).

I can only conclude that the reason the rape victims didn't come forward, is that they knew they had it coming to them.

This, I think, will satisfy a lot of people who are leery of NCAA action. There are apparently other ways to go about this besides the "death penalty" with which we are already familiar. Interesting read...

A Fate Worse Than Death

So much of the debate over whether and how the NCAA could punish Penn State has focused on areas of the NCAA Manual like Bylaw 10.1, Bylaw 2, and Bylaw 19. But there?s another place Penn State might need to worry about should the NCAA decide to follow through on investigating the athletic department. It?s a bylaw that both clearly establishes the NCAA?s authority to discipline Penn State, while also allowing it the freedom to impose a wide range of sanctions, up to and including an NCAA penalty that is worse than the ?death penalty.?

At its most basic, the NCAA is a voluntary membership organization. To put it more bluntly, the NCAA is a club. As a club, it has the power to let in the types of organizations it likes. More importantly, it has the power to kick schools out of the club:

Bylaw 3.2.5 Loss of Active Membership
3.2.5.1 Termination or Suspension. The membership of any active member failing to maintain the academic or athletics standards required for such membership or failing to meet the conditions and obligations of membership may be suspended, terminated, or otherwise disciplined by a vote of two-thirds of the delegates present and voting at an annual Convention.
Bylaw 3.2.4.12 Standards. Active members agree to maintain high standards of personal honor, eligibility and fair play.
That statement can be parsed many ways, and the NCAA members could always fall back on reading ?with respect to NCAA rules? at the end of the bylaw. But combined with statements like Bylaw 2.4?s lofty claim that ethical conduct ?should be manifest not only in athletics participation, but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program,? it certainly establishes enough credibility for the NCAA membership to act.

Should the NCAA get involved, this is the best way. It sets a precedent in the way precedent should be set: by a super-majority of the entire association agreeing to move the organization in that direction. It does not require that the normal enforcement procedures be stretched to accommodate a scandal that goes far beyond NCAA rules. And it matches an unprecedented situation with an equally unprecedented vote.

An email from Pres. Erickson to alumni...

Moving forward from the Freeh Report
A message from
President Rodney Erickson
July 16, 2012

Dear Penn State Alumni:

As we all can attest, it has been a heart-wrenching and difficult eight months since we first learned of the charges against Jerry Sandusky and top-level Penn State officials. With the release Thursday of the investigative report by Judge Louis Freeh, the last several days have taken an additional toll.

My heart remains heavy for the victims of this tragedy, which has been a sobering reminder of what can occur when we fail to protect society's weakest and most vulnerable. As one learned scholar so aptly said, "All that's necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing."

We can never again allow this to happen.

The 267-page Freeh Report, while difficult to digest, was a necessary step in finding the truth and continuing our healing process as a community. We must not be afraid to examine ourselves, our policies and our actions ? with the clear intent of taking corrective measures and righting the wrongs.

As I have said in previous messages to you, the University is committed to ensuring that our campuses are safe for children and helping build greater awareness of child sexual abuse and maltreatment. We also are committed to reaching out to any victims of Mr. Sandusky's conduct, to discuss the University's responsibility for any failures in leadership and to help them heal.

Although we cannot undo history, we can become agents for change and reaffirm our core values of honesty, integrity and justice. I promise you, we will learn from our past and take the steps that will allow us to emerge and grow into a stronger, better university

As we move forward, there are many decisions that must be made ? decisions that are not without consequences and must not be done without careful thought. Many of these decisions involve individuals and practices deeply woven into the fabric of our community.

All of this will take time.

Time to heal. Time to comprehend. Time to trust. Time to transform. Time to regain what has been lost, and time to move forward.

The world is watching and they are anxious for expedient responses. I would ask that your response to this public scrutiny be to continue your excellent work in the classroom, the lab, the office or wherever you are making your mark in this world and on behalf of Penn State. It is through your diligence and dedication that the world will again view Penn State as a force for advancement and good.

This is not the end of the process, nor will it be the end of a number of investigations or inquiries into the University. We will continue to cooperate fully with all agencies and will communicate these interactions with you, our community. We plan to analyze the many recommendations made in the Freeh Report and begin implementing a number of them as quickly as possible. We also will keep you updated on these actions at www.progress.psu.edu.

As always, I am proud of the work of our faculty, staff, students and alumni. As we face the difficult weeks and months ahead I ask that you keep the victims in mind and continue to uphold the high standard of excellence that will take this great University into the future.

President Rodney Erickson
