Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

2017 - McSorely lost that game. Yeah, Ohio State did a lot to win it, but McSorely lost it. First and goal at the 7, up 8. Ohio State holds them to a field goal, but I am convinced that either Ohio State's defense hid their play call, or McSorely just sucked at reading it. 3 straight read options and he made the wrong call on all 3. If Penn State is up 15 after that, Ohio State needs 2 touchdowns (which they did get) and a 2-point conversion (which they didn't get in 2 tries). That stop was the game and McSorely lost it. Sure, Franklin had a couple more chances to manage the game badly, and he succeeded at it. But I think that neither of them helped Ohio State as much as McSorely did on those 3 plays.

It seemed obvious to me then, and now, that they realized Barkley didn't have the fight to grind yards. I don't think there was a read at the goalline, McSorely and Barkley knew who was getting it all 3 times.
They stopped doing anything with Barkley in the 4th Q.

Shameless self promotion... All runs from late 3rd. Included the passes where Barkley was target or stayed to block ... turnstyles offer more resistance.

Apparently they remember 2005 as fondly as we remember Joe PoopyPants in 2006.

It's funny b/c the game didn't even matter. I barely remember caring.
- Already eliminated from NC by Texas
- Still got a share of the Conference Title
- Beat scUM in style
- Hawk laying his claim to future wife while terrorizing Brady Quinn. The Teddy Ginn show (it's ridiculous he's still in The League). And Pittman with the dagger to the heart 2 games in a row.

It's one of the most joyful 1-2 season finishers in memory.

Isn't that also the year they lost to Michigan when Llllllloyd added time back on the clock? I have a feeling their memories of that year are tinged with bitterness.

2005 was indeed the year that TTUN, at home, beat Penn St on a pass to Manningham on a play that stated with 1 second left. Lloyd had gotten the refs to add a second (probably legit) to go from 29 to 30 seconds remaining. (Edit - added 2, from 28 to 30, thx, Zurp)

They'll claim it's karma for losing at Sparty when Jeff Smoker spiked the ball with 1 second left, thanks to a Sparty timekeeper, then beat TTUN with a TD pass on the next play. That was 'Clockgate' :slappy:

Both winning teams got a last-second victory despite idiocy by their offensive players in the last 30 seconds. Bike Hart had a first down and an easy path out of bounds, but decided to try to run through 3 guys instead of stopping the clock.

Smoker got a first-and-goal situation with 23 seconds left and no timeouts. He spiked it (which was ok, they should have had 3 more chances), but it took 3 or 4 seconds after they were lined up to spike the ball. Then he scrambled on second down, getting tackled around the 3-yard line with 12 seconds left. They only got the third-down spike because of the quick-triggered hometown clock operator.

I know we're splitting hairs, but he had 2 seconds added, from 28 to 30.
Possibly my favorite Michigan win of all time. I know that's kinda weird thing to say - like, "That was my favorite time getting kicked in the nuts."

Penn State's touchdown was scored with 0:53 remaining. Watch Michigan's final drive starting around 2:38:00.
First play of the drive (2:39:00) is the famous "heel-toe" play. (If you lurk on BWI for a minute you'll know about this, already.)
Very next play brings us to 0:30. He gets tackled in bounds with 0:31. The clock gets stopped at 0:28. Michigan has called a time out. Cut to Lloyd whining. Come back to action with 0:28 still on the clock. Referees are discussing it. Referee tells clock operator to put 2 seconds back on the clock.
(2:43:00) 3rd and 1 - run Hart off left side. He gets some good yards (including the first down), he can step out of bounds at the 20 or 18. But he cuts in to get pushed out of bounds at the 16. Good work. (Good memory, BB73 - I forgot about that one.) I think he got pushed backward. The clock should have started when the chains reset, but they started it at the snap.
I seem to remember seeing some kind of evidence showing that the clock SHOULD have stopped at 30 seconds. But it's not shown on this telecast.
But if I'm a Penn State fan, I'd be more frustrated that the officials didn't start the clock right away when Hart got pushed backward out of bounds.

That's how I always remembered it, too....but a few years ago looking back on it and I can't find that evidence either.

But it's a good thing they got hosed, because they certainly would've wiped the floor with either USC or Texas. Just ask them.

Didn't Paterno also get a couple seconds put back on the clock earlier in the game?

Archiving this here (as tinypic appears to be dead now)

Every time I see that I just have to giggle.

Since 2005 Ohio State and Penn State have played 14 times. Ohio State has won 11 and lost 3 of those games. That's a .786 winning pct.
Penn State joined the conference for play in 1993. Between 1993 and including 2005, Ohio State won 8 and lost 5. That's a .615 winning pct.

So.. the "rise of a new rule," apparently, is that Penn State would become worse against Ohio State....

Anyway, "The Rail" shall always remind me that you never write a "history" about a future that hasn't been written yet.
