Intent matters.

Mentoring young people on their decision making, appearance or otherwise, and how it may affect them down the line is honorable. Judging young people and shaming or belittling them is deplorable.

Agree

Context also matters

I was not convinced, at first, that the letter-sender was racist. It seemed to me that he complained of long hair and tattoos, something you see on white guys all the time. It could well be, I thought, that his bigotry had to do with thinking that the grooming habits of "his day" were in some way objectively superior to those of "kids these days". This is a common form of bigotry where I live. I know several older people, some not much older than me, that hold these views; several of them are hispanic, some of them are african-american, some are from the Caribbean (I live in South Florida). It's not about race to them, but I still see it as bigotry, the intellectual and moral equivalent of racism.

So rather than just take everyone's word for it, I actually thought about it. The most important question, to me, is "why did he choose to send the letter to THIS football player?" It seemed plausible to me that he sent a version of the letter to several players, some of whom looked like AJ Hawk circa 2005, and that these other letters just weren't being publicized.

So I looked through the Penn State roster. One white guy, a kicker, has long hair. And it's probably not long enough to spill out from under his helmet. And it's very doubtful that this guy writes letters to kickers.

Nope. The context tells us there's a reason this guy sent THIS letter to THIS player... racism. To be honest with you, I wouldn't look at it much differently if it were the cultural bigotry that I mentioned above. It's pretty much the same to me. Bigotry is bigotry.

He should watch lacrosse. Lax bros with flow all over the field there. But... there's generally a decidedly lower number of tats.

But yeah, I suspect that the author of the letter doesn't consider himself racist... overtly. But the author's subconscious / microaggression suggests otherwise.
