Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

No doubt. Watched it twice. Even in slomo his shoulder pad barely grazed the kids helmet. Thought it looked like a pretty good acting job by the PSU kid.

To me the bad part wasn’t that he almost whiffed entirely, it’s that, like with so many of these calls, the ball carrier was tackled from behind half an instant before he got there and was falling forward. When approaching from the front, you either make contact with the head or not at all. In other words, the only way to avoid a penalty in that situation is to cease all defensive effort.

Agreed.

They got that call right, imo, by the very letter of the rule. It wasn't the hit, it was that he grazed the offensive players head after he had become defenseless. That is the rule and they called it the way they had to call it.

When he became defenseless is the bitch of it.

And another facet to all of this is the fact that Arnette and and ball carrier had a much more violent head to head collision causing Arnette to leave the game due to injury and no call was made against either player. They are not very consistent.

I guess defenders being run over are never considered defenseless.

Maybe we could have 2 tiers of Targeting penalties (similar to Face Mask penalties) --- a 5-yarder and the 15-yarder + ejection.

Pryor at least tried to adjust. He deserves credit for that. It's tough: one second Hamler has a step on the DB and the ball is in the air and Pryor is coming over. The next second Hamler is doing a 180 to adjust to the ball. The next second the 2 players have converged.

That's a good idea.

Overall I think the rule is working because you see guys, like Pryor, who had zero intent to harm. In fact they are pulling up.

I like the 5 yard variety option.

So are you gonna call 5 yards when Pryor tries to hold up, still inadvertently makes contact to the head with a knee or a shoulder bc the defenseless receiver is tackled into him, and the receiver is knocked unconscious because of it?

I think you should try to go by intent moreso than result, sure.

Can it be done? No idea but worth a try imo.

And the reality is that we just aren’t Ohio State, which makes these blown wins over the past 2 years that much worse.
I'm OK with that. They are the school that put winning football games above abuse victims.

I don't want to click through... please tell me there's at least one Pedster who realized the blatant inanity of a Pedster claiming some school other than Ped put football abuse victims... or whatever you want to call them.

They also do some fantastic mental gymnastics to figure out they've actually won 4 out of 17 years, not 4 out of 26, because of course the years they were bad don't count...
26 years in the B1G includes the dark years (01-04) and Sandusky (11-15). Yes '11 counts. PSU was 8-1 with its only loss to Bama before things broke.
So that 17 years remaining. In reality, PSU has won the B1G in 23.5% of available years.
