Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I can't find the thread, anymore. But somewhere the guy whines about how if Penn State gets left out, it would be the biggest snub in all of sports history. (Or something like that.) Other people come up with 1968, 1969, 1973, 1994, and 2005 being bigger snubs.
I know about 1994 - they got bumped for Nebraska, and the "Big Ten Voters" (the Big Ten has never had any voters you dim-dumb-dorbs!!!) let it / made it happen.
2005 - I don't think this was a snub, really. They had 1 loss and USC and Texas were each undefeated. No Rose Bowl for you. They can and do whine about the officiating, but that's not a "snub" (right or wrong).
1969 - They had a great chance to play #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. But Good ol' JoePa, who was this great man who hated racism, decided to play in the Orange Bowl. And then he whines because President Nixon picks Texas as the #1 team. I really like the story about how Paterno told Nixon to shove it. Of course, there's no proof of this... so.... it's still a great story!!!

But about 1968 and 1973? I know Ohio State was #1 in 1968, and Penn State was also undefeated. Snub? And 1973, I don't know who was #1. (Ohio State dropped after tying Michigan.) Snub?
In 1973 they played an atrocious schedule, and never rose above #5 in the polls. Their only quality opponent was Pitt, until the bowl game. Alabama won one NC, before the bowls, and ND won the split by beating Alabama, taking the AP.

In 1968, they did not play a ranked team until the Orange Bowl (No 8. Kansas) Ohio State and USC met in the Rose Bowl, ranked #1 and #2 respectively. There is no real argument except in the minds of the pedsters.

You are missing the point.

Just like tsun, Penn State has never been defeated on the field of play. They have been cheated many, many, many times but never defeated. Therefore by extension, any season that ends without the world recognizing Penn states position as the only real #1 (and of course paying homage to the fact they do it better and cleaner than everyone else), was a snub.

Screwed and/or snubbed. Never beaten.

That sounds like Notre Dame fans, who love to say they're "different" than other schools. It's actually true this season. What other 4-8 team would get so much TV coverage?

Fun article for the cult:

1) there is bias in college football officiating in favor of the "protected flagships"
2) they are one of the protected flagships

Leaving aside the Cult's stupidity and the entertainment value of the article, you can actually look this stuff up, and here are a couple of interesting things.

1. For 2016, OSU is 9th in the BIG (64th nationally) for fewest penalties called against and 8th in the BIG (44th nationally for fewest penalty yards: quite a few 5-yard Shugarts is my guess as to the better ranking in yards). "Helmet" schools Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Purdue at the top of the BIG rankings and top 10 nationally in both categories. Both scUM and PedSU are ahead of OSU in both categories.

2. But the biggest reason why the article, and the guy's study, is crap is that it doesn't go into penalties (or lack thereof) called against a team's opponents. I have a hypothesis that the officials "swallow the whistle" against OSU opponents (and maybe opponents of other powerhouse programs although I haven't looked) because OSU "doesn't need any help." Ironically, the PedSU and scUM fans may just have a point if the officials do that against weak opponents but don't "swallow the whistle" when OSU is perceived to have a "tough" opponent (notwithstanding the 1 penalty called against PedSU in this year's game). Here is OSU's ranking in penalties called against opponents (the higher the number the fewer the penalties) for the last 14 years, which is what I have easily accessible data for (the second number is the total number of FBS teams and the third is rounded to the nearest one percent percentile rank among all FBS teams)

2016: 123-128 96%
2015: 101-128 79%
2014: 106-128 83%
2013: 74-125 59%
2012: 71-124 57%
2011: 50-120 42%
2010: 99-120 83%
2009: 107-120 89%
2008: 106-120 88%
2007: 120-120 100%
2006: 119-119 100%
2005: 118-119 99%
2004: 91-117 78%
2003: 75-117 64%

The average percentile rank for penalties called against OSU's opponents over 14 seasons is 80%. In other words, in an AVERAGE year 4 out of 5 FBS teams have more penalties called against their opponents than OSU does. I'd be willing to bet that over the 14-year sample period that's very close to or even right at the top of the "opponents getting away with murder" statistic for all FBS schools. Also supporting my hypothesis that the officials "swallow the whistle" for inferior opponents is that the only year in which OSU ranked in the top half of the FBS for penalties called against opponents was 2011, when OSU was not its usual dominant self.

Easily refuted by BWI:
"But those numbers don't take into account the TIMING of the penalties. If Ohio State gives up a 9-yard play, and the officials call a 10-yard penalty, so what? Do that 15 times a game and it looks like Ohio State gave up 15 penalties for 150 yards. But it was really only 15 yards (1 yard each). But Penn State runs for a touchdown, and it's called back for a questionable holding call. The 65-yard touchdown becomes -10 yards. 1 penalty for 75 yards. I'd take the 15 penalties for 1 yard each over the 1 penalty for 75 yards (and 7 points)."

That was easy mode.

We can bitch all we like but the cult is celebrating tonight, and we would too if we were in their position.

Hopefully, their dreams will get crushed tomorrow...we'll see.
