Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Fine, you guys decide.

Do you want to celebrate B1G-level excellence - conference championships, New Year's Six bowl games, top-5 finishes, national titles?

Or do you want to engage in MAC-level shenanigans - The Rail, whiteouts, the lion's roar, the Big Uglies, Cardboard Joe.

What's next? Jangling keys? Cowbells? Jump Around?

You decide.
Jump Around is a dope song though.

That's a really good point. It's like they're implying that they "stole" the "reigning Big Ten awesome guys" status from Ohio State. But that was 2005. Who was Ohio State up to and including that year? Ohio State won the Big Ten and the National Championship 3 years before, but nothing since. They way they finished 2004 got us fans really excited about 2005, but the fact that Ohio State already lost to Texas in 2005 made most of us forget about a national championship. But Michigan was still the "reigning Big Ten awesome guys" in 2005. They won the Big Ten in 2003 and 2004 (probably tied in 2004). They may have won in 2001, too - I forget that year, and they weren't any real schlubs in 2002, either. So Penn State "comes back" and beats a team in a game that everyone agrees will be close. (I've read on this site the past couple days that it was either 4 points in favor of Penn State or 4 points in favor of Ohio State. Either way, it's supposed to be a close game.) But they didn't really beat anyone, yet. Michigan should have been that team that they needed to "steal" that "new rule" from. And they failed to do that, opening the door to share the Big Ten title with Ohio State. Ohio State went on to win the next 2 Big Ten championships outright, before Penn State beat Ohio State in 2008. THAT game should have appeared to be more of a "rise of a new rule" than the 2005 game. Of course, there's no rail to commemorate that game. Of course, Penn State failed to beat Iowa that year, and they had to share the championship with Ohio State, again.

If anything, 2005 should have been their attempt to STOP the rise of a new rule. They won the battle, but lost the war.
naw...that's revisionist history. we were supposed to destroy them that day, and we fell on our faces. I know what the spread was....but we were a much better team than they were, and we fucked it up. we were on top of the B1G in 2005.

Sarcasm? All I know is that I thought we'd win, but we were 3-1, 1-0 going in to that game. There must have been a few teams that were "on top" of the Big Ten.

Yeah, we should've beaten them in '05.
We didn't & it was a mild upset.
Good for them. It happens.

Was it a significant enough upset for them to hang a piece of garbage in order to commemorate it? Sure, if you're into that sort of thing. Seems mighty lame to me.

The whole self-appointed "new rule" that was indoctrinated by the upset?
Nothing more than wishful thinking on their part.

You know what they say - Wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up faster......

I went to a guy's house a few years back and he had all his diplomas and student awards hanging on the wall in his family room, including a large sized poster from his undergrad senior project. Keep in mind this guy was 30-something. Who would do that? Yep, Ped State Grad.

We had Texas beat in the Shoe despite the fact that Tressel still had a hardon for Zwick, who played half the game. We were better than Penn State that year.....and I fully believe if we had won that Texas game like we should have, there's no way we lose to the cult. We were on top of the B1G.

I can't really argue with any of that. I just think that "rise of a new rule" implies that Penn State was throwing out the old dynasty to become the new one. Ohio State may have been favored to win the Big Ten, but we were not a dynasty (yet). But other than dynasty, we may have been on top because of perception and/or because of record. And as far as record goes, half of the teams were 1-0 at that point, so that's silly to claim to be "on top". And perception: again, we probably were favored to win the conference, and maybe were the best team. But certainly we all remember times when we were favored to win and didn't, or someone else was favored to win and we won. It's not far-fetched that Ohio State would lose this game. 2007 Illinois was a far bigger upset. 1998 Michigan State. 2004 Michigan. Or how about last night's USC-Washington game? I guess all I'm saying is that whoever is responsible for "the Rail" is a big goober.

It was a great win/upset and definitely worthy of commemoration.

The new rule silliness is where it jumps the shark. OSU was a big team that year but had not won the league in 3 years. They probably should have played USC for the title but they limped through september, including a pretty bumpy outing for Troy against SDSU.

1 week after "the rail", Mario derailed them (PSU would share the B1G title with OSU).

1 year after "the rail", Troy had his heisman moment against them (and his teammates enjoyed a pair of Pick Six U moments).

1 year + change afterwards, the blue bloods of the B1G met in the biggest Game ever.

1.5 years after "the rail", OSU went to the NC game.

2.5 years after "the rail", OSU went to a second straight NC game.

3.5 years after "the rail", PSU would share another title with OSU.

4.5 years after "the rail", OSU would win its 5th consecutive B1G title.

If, but, if, but. Penn State didn't field a team of schlubs in 2005, they came into the game ranked #16, and finished the season #3, and they were playing at home, and as has been pointed out, they were actually favored in the game. Did I think we would beat them? Sure! But I didn't exactly consider it an upset when it happened. Comparing it to great upsets in history is a bit much. I doubt this "upset" label would even be thrown about if Penn State hadn't been garbage from 2001-2004.

They were definitely not favored to win that game. That is wrong.

Hilarious thread over on BWI in response to a thread on the Indiana board that PSU still makes the Indiana poster angry and that PSU should have been kicked out of college athletics. Naturally, BWI is claiming that the Indiana fans are misinformed and don't know the "facts." Some of BWI's finest then head over to the Indiana board to school the Hoosiers on the "facts."

This Indiana thread is pure gold with angry Cult members: http://indiana.forums.rivals.com/threads/even-the-name-penn-state.57380/

Some select posts from BWI: Wow, they really hate 409 Fold/michnittlion over there. The Cult is claiming the michnittlion's life agenda is to destroy Joesus' reputation. Someone needs to tell The Cult that Joesus has doesn't have any reputation left to destroy.

Ducky_80&82G: "I think it's indicative of what the rest of the country thinks of us. None of them have a clue on what has happened here. None of them know about secret agendas of the people in power at PSU and the State government."

Fox Chapel II : "F them. It's not my job to change the concrete-filled minds of a bunch of Elmer Fudd lookalikes. I have never paid attention to being liked, least of all by the losingest program in B1G history."

lionlurker: "That loud clink you just heard are the BOT executive committee folks, gently knocking together their cognac glasses, as they have yet another toast to their successful venture."

bmw: "Dear God the psu representatives over there are worse than the IU posters. No one seems to know the facts or care to hear them."

simons96: "well FMR . . . michidiot is over there speaking on OUR behalf . . ."

nits74: "I don't go to other boards, but if true, I honestly think his life's agenda is to destroy the reputations of Paterno and others. Seriously, does this guy have any life?"

ropa6203: "Until Freeh falls, the false narrative stands... I've been saying this for years!"

mn78PSU83: "Do we really want him as OUR spokesman?:rolleyes::eek: Then again I'm sure he's just endearing himself to the IU faithful as one of the "good guys" from PSU."

RobBliz: "Wow that place is full of flaming A-holes."

Cold Smoke: "We need to take our revenge on the whole B1G. Steadily over time. I'm a patient man... It will come."

BobPSU92: "I'm wearing my "409 WINNINGEST COACH OF ALL TIME" T-shirt tonight. I call it my "Giant F-ck You Shirt."

AtlantaLion: "What a bunch of ignorant turds over there. The 'moderator' is full of shit. I know some Indiana folks, and they are much higher caliber human beings than the POS over on that site. Disappointing."
