I hope the way they take advantage is to run RPOs that look like our zone reads.

Such is the great thing about our offense.... it's just so hard to take things away from this offense. We allow defenses to choose what we do to score and we aren't uncomfortable doing it.

Because PED has some good secondary players I too think they'll really focus on our run game. Without their best DL player though it's going to take quite an effort to hold up vs our run game and that's not even accounting for holding our throw game in check too.

Their secondary is the best we will play all year but even an NFL secondary can't hold up forever vs these WRs if they don't get pressure. I just don't see how they get pressure with 4-6 when this OL is so good at pass pro and if they blitz they're really in trouble.

I feel like against PED that Ryan Day tries to make a physical statement instead of staying aggressive down the field. I hope we continue doing what we are doing with our play calling and don't get too fixated on pounding the ball.

A lot of people are looking forward to this match up to see what Ohio State's offense looks like against a good defense.

But what about the other side of that coin?

Sure, Penn State is #2 in scoring defense when you discard all games against FCS opponents, but what have they faced?

The average offense scores 27.22 points per game against FBS competition. Penn State's opponents score 22.54 against FBS competition. That would rank about 96th in the nation right now. Pretty Bad.

The average offense rushes for 4.24 yards per carry. Penn State's opponents rush for 3.99 yards per carry vs FBS opponents. That would tie Clemson for 76th in the nation. Below Average.

The average offense has a pass efficiency rating of 135.51 right now. Penn State's opponents have a PE of 111.28 vs FBS opponents. That would rank 109th in the nation. That's appallingly bad.

Much has been made of the fact that the OSU offense is going to go against athletes like they haven't seen all year in PSU's back 7. That's not strictly true; they went against that level of athlete in camp. They weren't playing a particularly good scheme in camp, but at least they've faced that level of athlete in camp and perhaps in practice if Ryan Day ever does 1s vs 1s during the season.

PSU's defense has faced NOTHING like Ohio State's offense. The highest rated passing game they've gone against is Ball State's, which is 86th in the country in pass efficiency. Their highest ranked Power-5 opponent in PE is Auburn at 88th. In camp or perhaps in practice they go against Sean Clifford, who ranks 78th among FBS quarterbacks when facing FBS defenses.

FCS Villanova put up a higher PE against the PSU defense than any of their FBS opponents.

It is not the Ohio State offense that has faced nothing like what they will see on Saturday night, it is the Penn State defense.

Interesting that you posted this while I was writing the above. Based on how much better Ohio State's passing game is than anything the nits have seen, I would not be at all surprised if it is the passing game that eviscerates the kittens on Saturday night.

Without a running QB to threaten on zone reads, OSU will have to pass to open up the run every game. RPOs, screens, swing passes. They've been using at least 2 of these in every game since Tulsa.

I do think we'll see Stroud keep on a few plays and maybe run a draw if they lineup with a very light box on 3rd.

Pretty certain that Day & co have a couple of tricks up their sleeves for PSU. Yeah, think we'll see Stroud on a keeper or two, maybe a few more if their DBs manage to stay between tOSU's WRs and the QB. Seem to remember that last year Stroud broke a long gainer in garbage time for Fields, so we know he's got the wheels. Maybe now that the back up QBs have been blooded a bit, Stroud becomes another weapon with his feet. Day showcased the TE last week, giving PSU something more to worry about, but heck, with Treyveon and Olave et al, and now the Ruckert, why would Day want to put CJ in danger? The way he's playing, getting a few extra yards isn't worth the potential of injury. I'm more worried about PSU's offense against the Buckeyes D, but then again, I'm a worrier. All in all, expect a 42-10 game for the good guys. Go Bucks!

I keep seeing the rushing total but it was 9 OT's.

What was the total at the end of regulation?

(Not that I think it matters, just curious. Their D is about to feel like they were involved in a vigorous session of horseplay no matter what)

I think it was about 343, just from memory.

Edit, looks like they got 16 in OT (19 minus a 3-yard loss) so that would be 341.

I didn't sit through the entire game, but I did see a good chunk of the first half. Bert came out with 7 Olinemen & 2 TEs. Basically a goalline offense and dared PSU to put 6 or 7 Dlinemen on the field to match. So, they were basically doubleteaming each dlineman and pounding the ball down the field. Still only managed, what, 1 TD? (I think it was 13-13 at the end of regulation.)

Nope, it was 10-10. Amazing. How the hell did Illinois run for 343 yds (in regulation) and only manage 10 points?

A couple things on PEDs defense.

Best throwing team they faced was Auburn which ranks 49th. They also gave up 250 through the air to Villanova and something I've noticed is teams have a relatively good competition percentage on them as well.

Fulton did a great analysis the last day or two on this which goes over how OSU is now running the ball so well without a QB run threat. In short he said we are mixing up a ton of different kinds of runs and are running pistol a lot which is hard to get a read on which way the play is going. IMO we don't need the QB run to open things up nor do we need to throw it open. We just have to mix up our run looks. CJ did great vs IU with taking a few easy 5 yard runs and really that's all he needs to do.

Oh yeah I agree... I hope we don't go 2019 PED were we ran the ball the entire opening drive but I don't think we will this time. IMO this staff is in a groove with its balance and that will continue.
